An exciting new chapter for the Diversity Advocacy Alliance.

What began in 2022 as a shared commitment to creating greater access, representation, and opportunity within the design industry has reached an important milestone.

As recently announced in , the has officially become an independent nonprofit organization, expanding its mission beyond through year-round programming, new partnerships, and a broader national presence.

As a founding member, I’m grateful to have been part of this journey alongside a remarkable group of individuals who believe in building a more inclusive and connected design community.

Congratulations to everyone who has helped bring DAA to this moment. I look forward to what we will accomplish together.

Where classical architecture meets modern vision.

From hand-drawn pencil sketches to cinematic rendering, this is how Benjamin Johnston Design brings a luxury residence to life before construction begins. Framed by paneled millwork, patterned stone, and contemporary sculpture, this view through the atrium shows how architecture, interiors, and art work together to shape the experience of a home.

Every detail contributes to a composition designed to be discovered as you move through the space.

Outdoor living takes on a different character after sunset.

Poolside seating creates a place to gather. Beyond it, the illuminated water draws the eye toward the outdoor pavilion, while warm light from the house connects the setting to the rooms inside. Each layer has its own purpose, giving the view depth while keeping the atmosphere relaxed.

At Benjamin Johnston Design, we believe outdoor spaces deserve the same attention as every room within the home. When architecture, furnishings, and lighting are considered together, the transition from inside to out feels effortless—even as daylight fades.

Every great room deserves a beautiful focal point.

Few architectural elements command attention quite like a beautifully designed fireplace mantel. Whether carved from richly veined marble, defined by classical detailing, or expressed through a more restrained silhouette, a fireplace brings a sense of permanence, character, and quiet elegance to a room.

But its beauty extends well beyond the architecture. A mantel becomes a canvas for collected art, treasured objects, and seasonal touches, while the furnishings gathered around it create an invitation to linger.

As the seasons shift and cooler days approach, we’re reminded that the most memorable interiors balance architectural beauty with the simple pleasures of living.

After all, a fireplace should warm a room long before the first fire is lit.

Great art doesn't simply complete a room. It shapes it.

A single painting can inspire an entire palette, establish a focal point, or influence the forms and materials that surround it. In this home, rich blues move effortlessly from canvas to upholstery and rugs, while sculptural furnishings and lighting echo the artistry found throughout.

From the living and dining rooms to the staircase and dressing room, these thoughtful connections create spaces that feel both individually distinctive and beautifully connected.

We believe art should never be an afterthought. When art and interiors are conceived together, something extraordinary happens: the room gives the art context, and the art gives the room a point of view.

Same room. Same furnishings. Entirely different feeling.

The difference? Thoughtfully designed architectural millwork.

Beautifully proportioned wall paneling, carefully considered door surrounds, and ceiling details introduce rhythm, depth, and architectural character. Seeing a room with and without them reveals how much they contribute.

At Benjamin Johnston Design, these details are part of our earliest plans. Integrated with the architecture from the beginning, they create the permanence and refinement that help a home feel timeless.

Scottsdale, you certainly know how to make someone feel welcome!

One of the unexpected joys of bringing Refined Interiors on the road has been the opportunity to share not just our work, but the stories, lessons, and experiences that have shaped Benjamin Johnston Design along the way.

During Desert Design Week, I had the pleasure of joining John of Phoenix Home & Garden for a wonderful conversation about building a creative practice, finding your own design voice, embracing a little risk, and the journey from launching our firm to creating a furniture collection with Chaddock Furniture Workroom.

The beautiful Alexander Sinclair showroom provided the perfect setting for an afternoon of conversation, new connections, and signing copies of Refined Interiors.

A heartfelt thank you to Alexander Sinclair Showroom for the gracious hospitality, to John for such an engaging conversation, and to everyone who joined us. It’s these moments of connection with the design community that have made this book tour so meaningful.

It’s hard to picture the original bedroom once you’ve seen what it became.

This Georgetown primary bedroom renovation brought together a reworked layout, considered lighting, and architectural details that give the space its character. A marble fireplace and intricate ceiling moldings establish a classical foundation, while the clean lines of the canopy bed, layered textiles, and touches of plum bring a fresh perspective.

Each decision contributes to the way the room feels: calm enough to unwind, with plenty of personality to make it memorable.

Which detail caught your eye first?

Art is never just something you hang on a wall.

In a well-designed home, it can anchor the palette, shift the scale of a room, and create a focal point that changes how the space feels. A bold contemporary piece can bring energy. A quieter composition can bring balance.

When art is chosen with intention, it becomes part of the architecture, giving the room character, clarity, and a sense of authorship.

The right piece does not fill a wall. It makes the space feel complete.
