These are some of my dahlias ❤️ They were just removed from silica after almost 2 weeks—they held their color and shape so well for the most part!

I’m still trying to find the sweet spot for how long to leave them in—not enough time=not fully dried and becoming moldy, too much time=overly dry and a flower that falls apart. That’s what happened to the pile of burgundy petals you see in there 😂

Now to take a small brush to each petal to sweep out the silica granules. This is one of the reasons flower preservation takes as long as it does—there are quite a few steps that are a little tedious and can’t be rushed.

I need to decide how to finish them, whether it’s a shadow box frame or getting back into working with resin. Which method do you think I should use with them?

Frostmas came last night ❄️

Enjoy the icy dahlia and celosia beauty—it’s the last for this year ❤️ I think the heirloom mums survived it, we’ll see in the next few days if that holds true.

Now to make arrangements for tonight with the refrigerator full of dahlia blooms 😊

The garden is looking pretty spent (except for the mums and dahlias), the burning bush is burning, and the bees are too cold to fly. My heirloom mums are just beginning to bloom, but sadly tonight will be our first freeze ❄️

Last night Red was keeping me company and seemed as sad as I felt to see all the signs that the season is over. I’ve been cutting flowers every chance I had over the last week, trying to save as many as I can for my daughter’s wedding reception and to have a bunch of flowers to dry for projects to keep me occupied over the winter.

The garden is work…a LOT of work. But I love it dearly—whether I’m starting seeds, planting, cutting blooms or preserving them, I feel tension and any worries dissolving. Working with plants is the best stress reliever ❤️

So, barring an incorrect forecast, tomorrow morning I’ll go out early to take some beautiful pictures of frosted dahlias before the sun turns them to mush. And next week the great fall cleanup will commence so the garden can be tucked in for the coming winter.

I will miss it ❤️

Made these adorable dried flower pumpkins last night with my helpers 😁

These will be used in my daughter’s wedding reception this weekend—only about 30 more to go!

Guess what happens when swan neck gourds grow up a trellis instead of being on the ground?

They become straight neck gourds instead 😂

Harvested my gourds and mini-pumpkins today. I thought I had avoided squash bugs this season, but I found some today 😬 Time to rotate where I grow them next year!
