Bait-and-switch, part 3: when they show up, check before they start.

The most important moment is right after the technician arrives and before any tools come out.

Ask to see their license.
Make sure the price matches what you were told on the phone.
If the price has changed, you can say no. Do not let them start work.

If you've already told them to begin and the price jumps, you can still stop, but it gets harder. That's why the check comes first.

If someone is pressuring you, rushing you, or getting upset when you ask questions, that's your sign. You're allowed to send them away.

Bait-and-switch, part 1: the lowball call.

Here's how it works. You search for a locksmith and see a very low price. You call, and they say something like "service starts at..." or "it depends on the job." They never give you a total.

Then the technician shows up, looks at the lock, and the price jumps. Now it's late, you're already there, and you feel stuck.

What to do instead:
Ask for the total price, including the service call, before anyone leaves for your location. If they won't say a number, hang up and call the next one.

Locked out or lost keys is already stressful. Some "locksmiths" count on that vulnerablity. They quote you a low price on the phone, show up, and then say the job is suddenly three or four times more.

Here is how to protect yourself:

- Ask for their license before they touch anything. In Alabama, locksmiths must be licensed. Some "companies" will have one person get licensed and then have 10 other guys who actually come to do the work who are NOT licensed. feel free to ask them for their AESBL license. If they refuse or cannot provide, send them away. If they refuse to leave, Call the police.
- Get the price on the phone and make sure it matches the price when they arrive. If they refuse to give a TOTAL price without first sending a technician, hang up.
- If the price changes, you can say no. A real locksmith will tell you why before starting any work.
- Be careful of generic businesses and call centers that send whoever is closest. Out of area phone numbers when the technician calls you and out of state tags on the vehicle they show up in are huge red flags.
