Plant of the Week! - 10/29/26 - Hardy Mums! (Chrysanthemums)

When we think of Chrysanthemums, or "Mums," we often picture the colorful potted flowers sold at grocery stores every fall. But did you know that there are also varieties that can survive our cold Utah winters? (Yes, that means that you don't need to buy new mums for your porch every single year!)

Hardy Chrysanthemums (Chrysanthemum spp.) are beautiful, fall-blooming perennials that return year after year! Unlike many of the seasonal florist mums, these varieties are bred or selected for their cold hardiness, making them a wonderful (and colorful) addition to your perennial garden.

📈Quick facts:
Sun: Full sun, at least 6 hours daily.
Water: Moderate, regular watering with good drainage.
Hardiness: USDA Zones 3–9 or 4–9 (for the varieties we carry)
Height: Generally 1–2 feet, depending on variety.
Bloom Time: Late summer through fall. (usually mid of Sept. through mid Oct. in our area)
Flowers: A wide variety of colors, shapes, and sizes.
Plant Type: Hardy, herbaceous perennial.

Appearance & Flowering -
Hardy Chrysanthemums grow into beautiful, bushy perennials covered in colorful flowers. Their blooms come in a variety of types, from simple daisy-like flowers to large, rounded blossoms with dozens of petals! We also think that they add stunning coloring in the fall, and can even be a little spooky leading up to Halloween!

Here at the Garden Center, we currently carry 13 different varieties!

'Burnt Copper'
'Centennial Sun'
'Centerpiece'
'Clara Curtis'
'Grape Glow'
'Hillside Sheffield Pink'
'Maroon Pride'
'Mellow Moon'
'Minnruby'
'Rose Blush'
'Snowsota'
'White Bomb'
'Zonta'

You might ask, What's the difference between Hardy Mums and Grocery Store Mums?

Many mums sold at grocery stores are grown primarily for their color and to give temporary fall decorations. While they are beautiful, they will not live over winter in our area.

Hardy Chrysanthemums, on the other hand, are selected for their ability to survive colder temperatures and return as perennials! That is why we only carry the hardy types!

Until next week, happy planting!🌺

Plant of the Week! - 10/22/26 - Honeycrisp Apple! 🍎 If you were to ask us what our top selling apple was, we'd have to say Honeycrisp. Although it is common in both grocery stores and farmers markets, we think that this apple tastes better when you grow it yourself!

📈Quick facts:
Sun: Full sun, at least 6–8 hours daily.
Water: Deep, regular watering, especially during hot summer months.
Hardiness: USDA Zones 3–8.
Height: Approximately 15–25 feet, depending on rootstock.
Harvest: Usually September to early October in Utah, depending on location and weather.
Pollination: Requires a different, compatible apple variety for cross-pollination.
Fruit: Large, exceptionally crisp, juicy apples with a balanced sweet-tart flavor.

--
Honeycrisp apples are medium to large, (2.5-4") with absolutely beautiful red and pink coloring over a yellow-green background. (they are very showy apples) Inside, the apples have creamy-white flesh that is exceptionally juicy and crisp!

Honeycrisp is especially popular for fresh eating, but the apples are also wonderful in salads, pies, and other baked treats!

Regular watering (of any tree) is especially important during our hot, dry summers here in the Uintah Basin. Water deeply rather than giving the tree frequent, shallow sprinklings. (We usually suggest a twice weekly deep watering, unless the tree is planted in a yard with sprinklers.)

Aditional Information -

Pollination: Honeycrisp needs another compatible apple variety blooming around the same time to produce a good crop. Two Honeycrisp trees alone will not provide the necessary cross-pollination.

Harvesting: Honeycrisp apples typically ripen during September or early October in our area, depending on the season.

Whether you're planting your first fruit tree, or adding another variety to your orchard, Honeycrisp is a wonderful choice for anyone who loves showy, fresh, & crispy homegrown apples!

Until next week, happy planting!🌺

Plant of the Week! - 10/15/26 - Ivy (Houseplant)

Earlier this week, we noticed that our Ivy plants had grown over their containers, down through our mesh greenhouse tables, down several feet to the concrete floor, and had even begun to grow horizontally on the ground. Needless to say, it was time for a haircut!

Houseplant Ivy (Hedera helix) is a beautiful, fast-growing houseplant known for its trailing vines and attractive leaves! They are one of the easiest houseplants to care for, and come in so many different varieties.

📈Quick facts:
Light Reqirements: Bright, indirect sunlight to partial shade.
Water: Water when the top inch of soil begins to dry.
Temperature: Prefers cooler indoor temperatures, around 60–75°F.
Varieties we carry: Glacier Variegated Ivy, English Ivy, Sweetheart Ivy, Needlepoint Ivy, and Shamrock Ivy.

What does Ivy look like?
Ivys have trailing or climbing growth habits, making them great for hanging baskets, shelves, and decorative containers. They form small star shaped leaves, and one of the best things about Ivys are the different variations of color!

How to care for Ivy -
Ivy grows best in bright, indirect light, although it can tolerate some shade. Variegated varieties, like Glacier Ivy, do better with a little extra light to maintain their beautiful coloring.

Water when the top inch of soil begins to dry, and always use a pot with good drainage. Ivy doesn't like sitting in soggy soil!

Trimming the vines occasionally will encourage fuller, bushier growth and help keep your plant looking its best.

While some of the varieties are hardy to plant outside in our area, we usually suggest growing them as houseplants, because Ivies can grow very aggressively. So, if you do plant it outside, make sure it is in an area that gives it plenty of space to grow!

Until next week, happy planting!🌺
