In 1979, a college art major with a paintbrush and a passion for doing things right started painting houses in Kansas City. He didn't have a plan to build a company. He just cared deeply about the quality of his work — and people noticed.

That was Doug Bates. And nearly 47 years later, that same standard is still the foundation of everything Bates Painting Company does.

🎨 What started as a summer job became a career. A career became a company. And a company became one of the most trusted names in painting across the Kansas City metro — built not on marketing, but on craft, care, and a genuine love for the work.

🖌️ Doug will tell you that your home is our canvas — and he means it. As a trained artist and color theorist, he leads every project with an eye for detail that goes well beyond what most painting contractors bring to the table. His team reflects that same commitment. These aren't just painters. They're artists who happen to paint for a living.

✨ A fresh coat of paint does something hard to explain until you've experienced it.

The same room can feel larger or smaller, warmer or cooler, calmer or more energizing — depending almost entirely on what's on the walls. If there are spaces in your home you've been tolerating rather than enjoying, that's worth paying attention to.

Fall is one of our favorite seasons for interior work. Cooler weather, better scheduling availability, and plenty of time to enjoy the result before the new year.

📅 Book by December 31 and save 10% on your interior project. Work must be scheduled December 2026 – February 2027.

With 47 years of experience in the Kansas City metro and recognition from Angie's List and Best of Houzz, we bring craftsmanship and care to every room we paint. Because your home is our canvas — and the details matter.

Reach out to schedule a consultation, and let's talk through what your space needs.

🎨 There's a difference between a painting company that drops off a crew and disappears — and one where the owner shows up every single morning to check on the work and make sure you're happy. That difference matters. And it's exactly how Doug Bates has operated for nearly 47 years.

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
"Owner Doug Bates was professional, attentive, and responsive. I received a quality painting service at a reasonable price from this company. Mr. Bates showed up every morning for the duration of the project to check on the progress and my level of satisfaction."
— Cathy Stegall

🖌️ Professional. Attentive. Responsive. Present. That is the Bates Painting Company standard — not just for the crew, but for Doug himself. When you hire us, you're not handing your home off to strangers and hoping for the best. You're working with a team that is genuinely invested in the outcome.

✨ Your home is our canvas — and we treat it that way from day one to the last day on site.

The right interior paint color doesn't just change how a room looks. It changes how a room feels. 🎨

That's something Doug Bates has understood for nearly 47 years — and it's the philosophy behind every interior project Bates Painting Company takes on across the Kansas City metro.

🖌️ We don't just show up and roll walls. We start with a conversation. We look at your lighting, your floors, your furniture, your art — and we help you find colors that feel cohesive, intentional, and completely yours. Most people can't visualize an entire room from a paint chip. That's exactly what our color consultation process is designed to solve.

✨ From there, our team of artists gets to work. Every surface prepared properly. Every edge cut cleanly. Every ceiling, wall, and trim detail handled with the care and precision that has defined our work since 1979.

Our interior residential services include:
✅ Full interior repaints
✅ Cabinet painting
✅ Ceiling & trim painting
✅ Accent walls & specialty applications
✅ Limewash & mineral finish applications
✅ Faux finishes
✅ Drywall repair
✅ Color consultation — included with every project

Your home is our canvas — inside and out. And we'd love to help you fall in love with your interiors all over again. 🎨

Every project starts with a puzzle — and this one is a good one. 🎨

The Hopke home has a beautiful, warm red brick with an equally warm mortar tone. The homeowners came in with a vision: blue, gray, and white. And they've got a blue front door and blue address plaque they love — so blue was non-negotiable.

🧱 The challenge? Getting cool tones to feel at home against a very warm brick.

Here's how Doug is approaching it:

⬜ A warm gray that pulls from the mortar tones rather than fighting them — so the siding feels like it belongs with the brick, not against it.

🤍 An off-white instead of bright white — because next to the pre-finished white windows, a slightly warmer white actually makes the windows pop rather than compete.

🪵 A deep navy on the cedar columns — honoring the blue the homeowners love, but grounding it in something rich and intentional rather than going full bright blue on the body.

This is the color consultation process in real time. It's not just picking colors the client asks for — it's listening to what they love and finding a way to make it work beautifully with what's already there.

Stay tuned for the after. 👀

Design trends come and go — but some finishes are truly timeless. 🎨

If you've been noticing more warm, textured, organic walls showing up in the homes you admire, you're not imagining it. We are in the middle of a genuine design renaissance — moving away from the flat builder beige of the early 2000s and the cold gray minimalism of the 2010s, and into something that feels far more alive, layered, and intentional.

At the center of it all? Earthy neutrals and limewash paint.

🖌️ Here's a little of what our latest blog covers:

✅ Why the new generation of earthy neutrals is nothing like the flat, muddy beiges of the past — and what makes them so sophisticated
✅ What limewash paint actually is, why it dates back to ancient Rome and Egypt, and why it behaves so differently from standard paint
✅ Why limewash is one of the best finishes you can put on a brick exterior — and why standard latex paint on brick can actually cause long-term structural damage
✅ How interior limewash walls interact with light throughout the day, creating an evolving, living surface that never feels static or boring
✅ How to pair earthy neutrals and textured finishes with the right materials to pull a whole space together

✨ And why — no matter how beautiful the finish — this is one application that genuinely demands a professional hand.

This is the kind of work we love doing at Bates Painting Company. Your home is our canvas — and limewash is one of the most beautiful ways to prove it.

There's no shortage of painting companies in Kansas City. So why does it matter which one you choose?

Here's our honest answer. 🎨

We bring an artist's eye to every project. Doug Bates started this company as an art major who painted canvases as seriously as he painted houses. That artistic perspective never left. Today, your home is our canvas — and the way we see color, light, texture, and finish reflects nearly five decades of training that goes well beyond what most painting contractors bring to the table.

We actually consult on color. Most painting companies leave color selection up to you. We don't. Doug will come to your home, look at your floors, your fabrics, your art, your lighting — and use 47 years of experience to help you land on colors that feel right in your specific space. It's one of the things our clients consistently say made all the difference.

Our crew treats your home like their own. We've spent years building a team that understands craftsmanship isn't just about the end result — it's about how you get there. That means protecting your property, cleaning up every day, communicating clearly, and never cutting corners on prep work.

We've been doing this since 1979. Nearly five decades of Kansas City homes, Kansas City clients, and Kansas City trust. That kind of longevity doesn't happen by accident. It happens because you consistently do right by the people who invite you into their homes.

We have the awards to back it up. Proud recipients of the Angie's List Super Service Award and the Best of Houzz Service Award — two recognitions that reflect the experiences of real clients who trusted us with their most important space.

When you hire Bates Painting Company, you're not just getting fresh walls. You're getting a team that cares about your home as much as you do. 🎨
