There is a deep satisfaction in a tidy supply corner.

It says the gardener is thinking ahead, caring for the future garden while the present one winds down.

Order in the shed, order in the mind, and a calm feeling that spring is already being looked after.

5 Things to Bring Under Cover Before the Rains

1. Bagged soil and potting mix, stacked off the ground

2. Seeds in sealed bins, kept cool and dry

3. Fertilizers and amendments, since moisture turns them lumpy

4. Wooden handled tools and stakes

5. Twine, plant labels, and ties, which sun and rain wear out fast

The greenhouse is not growing plants this season. It is growing order. Every bag, bin, and tool finally has a home, and that feels like a harvest all its own.

Fill in your weekly garden note tonight.

Write down the planting date for the broccoli and cabbage, the feeding date three weeks out, and this week's highs and lows.

Next week you will be glad it is written down.

PS tune into my soft guitar lofi channel tonight while you journal and plan for your week. My latest video link will be in the comments 💖

Sweet one, the weeks ahead for fall containers are gentler than the weeks behind us, and a few small habits are all they ask.

The UC Master Gardeners of Santa Clara County describe an important shift for cool season gardens.

Seedlings need shallow, frequent watering, while established plants need deeper, less frequent watering.

As the broccoli and cabbage settle in and the days cool, the watering rhythm can stretch out, as long as you keep checking the soil.

The University of Kentucky Extension's rule for containers still holds, which is to water when the soil feels dry instead of on a fixed schedule.

Cold is not the concern yet, but it helps to know what the plants can handle.

The Santa Clara Master Gardeners note that well watered cool season crops tolerate light frosts between 28 and 32 degrees, and they suggest covering more tender crops with row cover when a hard frost below 28 is expected.

We are far from that in Fresno this week, and the frost kit is staged and ready for later.

There is also something lovely to look forward to.

According to the same guide, broccoli keeps forming side shoots for weeks after the main head is cut, while cabbage will not sprout again once it is cut.

So there is no rush.

Water by feel, watch the forecast, and enjoy the cool season.
