❄️ WINTER IS COMING! HOW DO YOU PROTECT YOUR PALMS?

For palm enthusiasts growing tropical species in colder climates, winter can present some serious challenges. But two Project Palm contributors have taken winter protection to another level!

🛡️ WINTERIZING THE TROPICAL GARDEN

Tim Covington of New York Tropical Garden shares his approach to protecting palms and other tropical plants through harsh winters, including the construction of impressive protective enclosures.

Ever wondered how enthusiasts manage to grow tropical palms in climates where freezing temperatures are a winter reality? Tim shows us how he does it!

🏡 MY GREENHOUSE PROJECT

Tim Gonyo of Northern Tropicals takes a different approach, documenting the construction of his own tropical greenhouse.

From planning to construction, Tim shares the work involved in creating a dedicated environment for his tropical collection.

Thinking about building a greenhouse of your own? You'll want to see this project!

📖 READ BOTH ARTICLES ON PROJECT PALM!

These fascinating, member-contributed stories are featured in the Project Palm Blog, where palm enthusiasts share their knowledge, experiences, and passion for growing palms.

Chambeyronia macrocarpa
Flamethrower Palm

🌴❤️ There's something magical about a palm pushing out a new leaf!

Take a look at this spectacular new red leaf emerging! Thanks so much to Bruce Lowe for sharing this wonderful photo from his personal collection!

While most palms produce new leaves in shades of green, some surprise us with brilliant reds, bronzes, oranges, and other unexpected colors.

Now we'd love to see YOURS! 📸

Do you have a palm that's produced a particularly colorful or unusual new leaf?

👇 Share your photos in the comments, tell us the species, and show us what you've got!

🌴 Even better: Upload your photos to Project Palm at projectpalm.net and help us build a growing, member-contributed collection of palms from around the world!

Let's see some spectacular new growth!

Iriartea deltoidea
Copa Palm

🌴 WE NEED YOUR HELP WITH THIS ONE!

At first glance, this beautiful rainforest palm might not seem particularly unusual. But there's something extraordinary happening at the base of its trunk!

Native to tropical Central and South America, this species develops a remarkable cone of stilt roots that can elevate the trunk well above the forest floor. It's one of the most fascinating root structures in the palm family!

📸 HERE'S WHERE WE NEED YOUR HELP!

Thanks to members, David Parker and Rob Kunz we have great photos of this species in the Project Palm Species Library, but we're missing something important: a good photograph showing those extraordinary stilt roots!

Have you photographed Iriartea deltoidea in its natural habitat, at a botanical garden, or in cultivation?

We'd love to add your photograph to our collection, with credit to you as the contributor!

Corypha umbraculifera
Talipot Palm

Imagine spending decades growing one of the world's largest palms, watching its enormous fan-shaped leaves develop into a spectacular crown.

Then, after 30–80 years or more, something extraordinary happens.

The palm produces a massive flowering structure that rises above its crown, bearing millions of tiny flowers!

And here's the remarkable part: It will never flower again.

The Talipot Palm is monocarpic, meaning it flowers and fruits just once in its lifetime. After producing its seeds, the entire palm eventually dies.

🌴 Here's our question: Would you plant a palm knowing you might never live to see it flower?

📸 Have you photographed a Talipot Palm—or another extraordinary palm species? We'd love to see your photos!

Explore more photographs, learn about this remarkable species, and contribute your own images to the Project Palm community:

Caryota obtusa
Giant Fishtail Palm

Formerly Caryota gigas. This palm species takes palm foliage to an entirely different level! With enormous, twice-divided leaves and distinctive fishtail-shaped leaflets, this spectacular species can look like something straight out of a prehistoric forest.

It's a reminder that the palm family is far more diverse than most people realize.

🌴 Here's our question: What's the most impressive palm you've ever encountered in person?

Was it the sheer size?
The unusual foliage?
Or something completely unexpected?

📸 We'd love to SEE it! Share your photos in the comments, or better yet, upload them to Project Palm and help us showcase the incredible diversity of palms around the world.
