Turns out my trickiest client yet is my oldest own daughter.
Unlike all her friends heading to schools stateside, armed with dorm floor plans, dimensions and TikToks documenting every square inch, St Andrews provides… none of that.
No floor plan. No dimensions. No reliable photos. No real idea what room she’d even be moving into.
So my very Type A daughter practiced deep breathing for several weeks, and we flew to Scotland with little more than her clothes and a vague promise from me that we would figure it out.
What followed was a whirlwind week of travel, St Andrews welcome events, shopping without a single dimension for reference, and attempting to furnish a room we had never seen.
And between Ikea, local hardware stores, Home Sense (their version of Home Goods), TKMaxx (that one goes without saying), and goofing off with her sister, we did it.
One of my most discerning, exacting clients is officially installed at the University of St Andrews.
I carried home empty suitcases and an even emptier heart. I’m still trying to figure out what time zone I’m in, while she has taken to Scottish university, and pub-life like a literal fish to water.
Apparently the client is very happy with the install.
And has already moved on without her designer. 😂🏴
