You do not have to do everything at once.

When a classroom budget is limited, start with the things that affect daily use the most. Think about safety, storage, traffic flow, appropriately sized furniture, and the areas children use most often.

Decorative upgrades can come later. A well-planned room should work well before it looks finished.

That kind of prioritization can make a big difference when opening, remodeling, or expanding a center.

The story is a serious one. Head Start programs across Illinois are facing real uncertainty, and the educators behind them keep showing up for kids every day. We’re grateful to work alongside teams like this.

We’re proud to have played a small part in creating a space for Educare’s work, and we want to do what we can to help amplify this important message.

Crain's Chicago Business

Yesterday, Educare was featured in a Crain’s Business Chicago article about proposed cuts to the Head Start Program Performance Standards. Annaliese Newmeyer, one of our education coordinators, joined Start Early Illinois’ Executive Director Nila Diab and Yvette Sanchez Fuentes, Senior Vice President of Government Relations and Research, to share what this could mean for families.

The proposed changes would significantly impact teacher-child ratios in classrooms, services for children with disabilities, dual-language learning and much more. As Annaliese says, Educare Chicago is the backbone of the community, and offering fewer services isn't an option. Follow the link below to read more, and take action with us:

Opening a daycare involves a long list of decisions, and furniture is only one part of it.

Before ordering products, it helps to think through how children and teachers will move through the building, where different activities will happen, how storage will work, and how each room supports the program.

The earlier those decisions are considered together, the fewer surprises you may run into later.

Designing for Enrollment Changes

Your center may look different six months from now than it does today.

Enrollment changes. Classrooms change age groups. Programs grow. A space that works perfectly today may need to serve a different purpose later.

That is why we like to think beyond the immediate setup. Flexible furniture, adaptable layouts, and smart storage can make it easier to adjust without starting over.

A beautiful classroom is not enough if teachers cannot easily see what is happening.

When planning a childcare space, sightlines should be part of the conversation from the beginning. Tall furniture, dividers, shelving, and room arrangements can all affect visibility.

Good design considers how teachers supervise the room while still giving children opportunities for independent play and exploration.

An infant classroom and a preschool classroom have very different needs.

The same is true for toddler rooms, Montessori environments, STEM-focused spaces, and classrooms designed for older preschoolers.

Furniture should reflect how children use the room, not simply what fits a standard classroom package. The right solution depends on the age group, activities, space, and daily routines.

Most of all, it should reflect what your program stands for.

Classroom design gets most of the attention, but what about the spaces families see first?

Reception areas, offices, staff lounges, and administrative spaces are also part of the childcare environment.

These areas need to be practical, organized, and appropriate for the people using them. A well-planned center considers the entire facility, not just the classrooms.
