Design Lens | Italy, through a designer's eye.

Beyond the beautiful architecture, it's the smaller details that always capture my attention. The faded finishes, intricate plasterwork, hand-carved ornamentation, antique mirrors, and extraordinary craftsmanship.

There's something wonderful about spaces that have evolved over centuries, where every surface and object has a story to tell.

Some pieces simply have too much personality to pass up!

I found these beautiful antique Italian swan chairs at one of my favorite antique dealers in Roundtop, and knew immediately they had something special—the carved frames, graceful swan arms and wonderful sense of history.

We gave them a new chapter with an unexpected patterned fabric that feels playful without taking away from their age and character.

I love the way they sit alongside the cleaner lines of the dining table and upholstered chairs. They weren’t chosen because they matched. They were chosen because they added something the room needed: character.

The most interesting homes are rarely filled with things from one place or one period. They evolve over time—a mix of old and new, refined and unexpected, meaningful and simply beautiful.

That’s what gives a home its own point of view.

A beautiful home isn’t only about how it looks.

It’s a dining room that makes you want to invite people over. Beautiful lighting in the evening. A comfortable chair you linger in a little longer. The small details that make ordinary routines feel a little more special.

That’s what I mean by living beautifully.

A home where beauty becomes part of everyday life.

Things Designers Notice: Scale

A room can be filled with beautiful things and still feel slightly off. Often, the problem is scale.

In an open space like this one, every element has to hold its own while still relating to everything around it.

The oversized ceiling fixture works with the volume of the vaulted ceiling. The chandelier defines the dining area without competing with it. A substantial coffee table anchors the seating arrangement, while the large rug gives the living room its own sense of place within the larger open floor plan.

Even the accessories matter. In a room with this much volume, tiny objects can easily disappear.

Scale isn’t necessarily about choosing bigger things. It’s about choosing pieces with the right proportion and presence for the space.

It’s one of those things you may not consciously notice when it’s right—but you almost always feel when it’s wrong.

Every house seems to have one—the weird little corner no one quite knows what to do with.

At Vista Verde, this spot in the living room had become home to a cabinet, but otherwise had no real purpose.

Rather than simply finding something prettier to fill the space, we gave the corner a job.

Wallpaper, suspended brass shelving, a pendant and a beautiful curved cabinet transformed it into a chic little bar just off the main living area.

No added square footage. No major construction. Just looking at an overlooked space differently.

Sometimes the smallest design decisions can completely change how a room feels.

I knew there was something behind this wall!

It was quite large, and I knew the powder room was directly behind it. But when I walked into the powder room, it was a perfectly ordinary size.

The proportions simply didn’t add up.

I asked the contractor to cut a small exploratory opening—and sure enough, we found completely unused space hiding inside the wall.

We opened it up, mirrored the proportions of the existing opening on the opposite side of the fireplace, and added floating shelves.

What had been wasted square footage became an architectural feature that also brought much-needed symmetry to this wall.

Sometimes a designer’s job is simply to notice when something doesn’t make sense.

Who says a home office needs a desk?

Our client spent much of her career traveling the world, working from her laptop and meeting clients in hotel lounges.

So when she told us she didn't want a traditional home office, we didn't give her one.

Instead, we designed a fun feminine lounge—a comfortable, layered space where she could work in the way that already felt natural to her.

Sometimes the best design question isn't “What belongs in this room?”
It's “How do you want to live in it?”

Your floor plan might call it a dining room, breakfast nook or office—but that doesn’t mean you have to use it that way.

At our French Quarter project, we looked at how the family actually lived and gave several spaces entirely new purposes. The formal dining room became a media room. An underused area beside the kitchen became their everyday dining space. And the oversized breakfast nook was transformed into a cozy lounge with a dry bar, while the new dividing wall gave us room for a dedicated baking station on the kitchen side.

Sometimes better design isn’t about adding more square footage. It’s about making the square footage you already have work better for the way you live.

Sometimes the smallest details are the most personal.

For this vanity, we designed a custom stool specifically for our client — including the height, proportions, upholstery and turned wood legs made using materials sourced from Turkey.

It’s a small piece in the room, but one designed entirely around the person who uses it. And those are often my favorite details.
