The flowers have almost all faded, and seed-heads now take center stage. The architecture of the garden changes, our perspective shifts to pick apart the different shades of brown, not actually brown at all when we look closely.
Seeds are intricate - they have deep and layered stories. Some expand with fluff, to be carried by the wind. Some are protected by a hard shell, waiting to open until the time is right. Some will be eaten by birds and rodents, to be dispersed far distances. We too collect and disperse these seeds, and wait for spring for new sprouts.
The nursery and garden are approaching their long slumber, but in the meantime, they offer us their seeds for future growth.
What seeds are you looking closely at lately?

CLOSED FOR THE SEASON
And that’s a wrap for the nursery season! Plants are going dormant and the cold is starting to set in, and we are now closed for the season.
I want to thank everyone who came by to buy plants, visited us at the market, and offered their support and encouragement over the season. As a small, first year business, every little bit of support was felt with deep gratitude.
I started this nursery because I truly believe in the power of plants- their ability to connect and empower us, to benefit the land and creatures we share our lives with, and to provide respite within an often uncertain and dark world. Every plant put in the ground heals the world in small but important ways. The nursery isn’t just a place where I grow and sell plants, it’s a resource for the community, where we can share knowledge and belonging with each other.

Nursery sales may be done for the year, but the work still continues behind the scenes. My mind is already on next season, with exciting plans in the works!
Feel free to reach out over the winter months to discuss any of your future garden and planting plans!

See you in spring!

The nursery season is winding down, and fall is here in its colorful extravagance. Leaves are peaking then falling, and we soak up the last bits of sun while we can. This has been the most enjoyable fall in years, and I am glad to be present for it. This time of year I get tired, like a plant, my body knows it’s almost time for its winter rest, but not yet. October still has so much to offer in nature, projects to wrap up, seeds to collect, the last harvests to enjoy.
Here are some beautiful moments from the last couple weeks to remind you of this beautiful season.

I’ll be at the Lancaster Farmers Market tomorrow 9-12 with the last of the plants for the season.
I’ll be taking my last nursery appointments this weekend as well.
Plants are quickly going into their dormant state, preparing for winter. It’s your last chance for your end-of-the-season planting projects!

One more about Monarchs,

I’ve been tracking the progress of this chrysalis since I found it last week, and was lucky enough to see this monarch butterfly right before it emerged. The chrysalis, starting off as a bright green color, begins to grow more translucent and you can see the curled up wings of the soon-to-be adult butterfly.
A couple hours after that first photo, I found it emerged. It struggled its way out, gaining the strength it needs to make the long journey down to the mountains in Mexico, where it will overwinter. Four generations removed from its ancestors that overwintered there last year, this monarch has never been there, but holds inside it the DNA which knows the way.

New eastern population counts show that overwintering monarchs increased by 64% in 2025-2026 compared to 2024-2025! No doubt in large part because people like you and me grew Milkweed plants, provided habitat and nectar, and celebrated these beautiful little lives. Gardening and growing these plants might not stop the floods and fires and wars, but every small action can help other small lives. Everything we do ripples out.

The fall colors are popping off, a couple frosts have already settled in, and the days are full of slanted light and crisp air. Such a beautiful season! I’ll be back at the Lancaster Farmers Market tomorrow 9-12 with a great selection of hardy perennials and native plants. Only a few weeks left before these beauties go dormant for the winter!

Update from the nursery garden:
New bed built just in time for fall planting. Luckily I’ve been setting aside some plants for myself, and this is now a new display / trial / stock garden. This new bed now sets a boundary between the garden and the road/ditch, and adds a much more welcoming touch to the entrance of the garden. This area is mostly rock, and any soil that is there is mostly sand. Nothing would grow there, so I piled my compost heap there instead, so it was a bit of an eyesore. Now with some deep, fresh soil from a local farm, this area will hopefully become full and lush in no time. I added the logs for both structure and because I like the organic look, plus it’s great habitat.
So if you think the gardening season is over, think again! There is still a bit of time to build new beds and plant hardy perennials to get a head start on next year. The cold is coming in quick though, so get planting!

Sometimes the universe throws out little signs that you are on the right path.
I was planting some Milkweed in one of our “meadows”, when the light caught my eye and I spotted a new Monarch chrysalis. A few feet from there I saw an old one, the butterfly already emerged. About 15ft away is an established patch of Milkweeds that the monarch caterpillars must have hatched from.
The Milkweed plant is important, but equally so is habitat. If that patch of Milkweed was just an island surrounded by short, mown lawn, there would be no safe spot for the caterpillars to start their metamorphosis. This is also why it is so important to leave plants standing throughout fall and winter. The lives we foster need habitat all year round, not just in summer.
In this meadow, which was created by simply not mowing it, I’ve been slowly adding more species to diversify what used to just be a weedy, mown lawn. Including the new Milkweeds, I added two types of Asters and Goldenrods, which will be important nectar plants when new Monarchs emerge and start their migration south to Mexico.

I’ve gone through the last of my Common Milkweed plants now, but I still have Butterfly W**d available for sale, another host plant. Plant it now to foster the next generation of Monarch Butterflies! I’ll be collecting seeds for new plants next year.
