Ooh la la! I think I have this sourdough bread baking dialed in to perfection🤎. I started my sourdough journey last Fall when my daughter gave me some of her starter and a link to a “Foolproof Sourdough” video by Alexandria’s Kitchen on YouTube. From there I followed lots of different Facebook and Instagram posts on sourdough and began tweaking this and that to get the results I was hoping for. This morning I tried one more little suggestion and misted the dough before putting the lid on and putting it in the oven and it came out like this with the most beautiful crust. It took me many years of wanting to make sourdough to finally taking the plunge and now I’m all in and am baking more regularly so I have loaves for my sweet Farmstore. I think my next baking adventure will be sourdough cinnamon rolls for take and bake from frozen art the Farmstore…stay tuned for more of Marie’s baking adventures🤎.

We have an abundance of gorgeous young Marans roos from this season’s hatchings from dark egg genetics Marans from the Alchemist line of dark egg Blue Copper Marans. We have blue copper, black copper, splash and two super light blue that would almost be called lavender in color…one will have strawberry blonde coloring on his head and neck, the other is a light blue/lavender splash. Really pretty birds. Eggs shown are the eggs they hatched from. If you are looking to add rainbow eggs to your flock the secret ingredient is a dark egg genetic roo.

Pretty eggcited! Hatched out a Blue Copper Marans from this amazingly dark egg. If a roo he will be our next gen rooster for our Blue Copper Marans with dark, dark, dark egg genetics breeding program. The focus this season’s hatchings has been on building up our flock of Blue Copper Marans pullets with dark egg genetics but we had to hatch out over 40 chicks to finally get eight Blue pullets. We have Blue Copper Marans Cockerels, Black Copper Marans, Cockerels, Splash Marans Cockerels and a batch of unsexed Marans chicks in Black , Blue and Splash feather coloring. The secret sauce to having your flock laying rainbow colored eggs is in having a dark egg genetic rooster. I just added them to our website if you are looking to add dark colored egg layers to your flock🤎🐣 chocolateflowerfarm.com

Hoping for one more super dark egg like the one front left and center tomorrow then I’ll set this batch of beauties from our Blue, Black and Splash Marans hens in the incubator. I’m sure happy with the eggs these ladies are producing. We have pullets, and cockerels from this season’s hatchings (all hatched from same hens who laid pictured eggs) listed on our website and our next Marans hatch that will have unsexed chicks is this Thursday. I’ll post them as available on the website Friday once I know how many there are of each color. Our roosters are Blue Copper Marans from Alchemist Farm that we purchased in 2024 when they introduced the Blue Copper line that has really dark egg genetics. Our website is chocolateflowerfarm.com 🐣🤎

On a happier note of “Wildlife on the Farm”…This answers the question everybody asks about how our super friendly Douglas squirrel we named Doug (before we knew she was a she) became so friendly. Farm visitors feed peanuts to our mini goats and carrots to our mini horse and mini donkey and Doug used to wait until folks left and then would run over and work the lid on the peanut jar to unscrew it but if that didn’t work she’d push the jar off the table and the lid would often pop off that way. Then she’d eat allll of the peanuts. Over time last summer she got bolder and bolder and visitors enjoyed feeding her peanuts. She became overly friendly and I’ve worked hard at teaching her about personal space so she doesn’t run up visitors legs looking for handouts. She’s a sweet addition to our farmly.. this spring she had babies so now we have several mini Dougs running around.

…haha as I’m typing this she just ran into the farmhouse kitchen looking for breakfast🤣🐿️🤎

This sweet fawn was born less than a week ago and it was such a joy to watch it following its mama through our lower pasture. Today Rick found it in our upper pasture laying in the hot sun and panting, clearly in distress. He brought it down to the house in the shade in a quiet space. We contacted Wolf Hollow Wildlife Rescue on San Juan Island for help. They said it was clearly in distress and could we bring it to the emergency wildlife vet in Anacortes. Of course. We prepped our suv for it for a safe, quiet transport but just before we went to put it in the car it died. We didn’t want to handle it to inspect for injury while it was in distress but after it passed Rick found that it had been shot with either a Pellet gun or a 22. Poor sweet thing. We are on eight acres just on the edge of Langley City limits. It had to have happened near our farm yet it is unfathomable as to who would shoot such a sweet little baby. What is wrong with people?,

Went to close up the enclosures for the mama, babies and teenager chicks only to find all three juvenile Great Horned Owls hanging out on our tractor. I was outside gardening all day with the birds free ranging and all are now locked up in their coops for the night. I’ve had chickens for over 30 yrs and have been here on this farm for 21 years. This is the first time I’ve had to deal with in our face owl predator pressure. They are so dang cute and we feel honored to have such wonderful creatures here but we will continue to shoosh them away and discourage them from foraging on our sweet pets.
