Friends, summer is over, but our little desert garden is far from finished! 🌱🍂

We’re making room for a whole new growing season here in Las Vegas, and I’m taking you along as we transition from summer into fall and winter.

There’s still so much we can grow, even as the temperatures cool down!

My newest video, “What I’m Growing After Summer in My Las Vegas Garden,” is now on YouTube!

Today I turn 56—and my birthday wish has roots. 🎂🌱✨

Through Curious Greens, I’m combining my love of design and gardening to create a small desert space filled with possibility. And I love having you here as it grows.

If you’d like to celebrate with me, I’ve set a $1,500 birthday goal to help fund the next hands-on work: protective enclosures for my raised beds, remaining building materials, hardware and essential tools.

🎁 Cash App: $FabDes

Swipe through for the story behind the wish and what your gift can help build. I’ll share our progress as the work unfolds.

Your encouragement, shares and time spent growing alongside me are gifts, too. Thank you for being part of Curious Greens—and this next chapter. 💕

Still planting. Still learning. Still growing.

🍠 ALL THOSE VINES… BUT WHERE ARE THE SWEET POTATOES?! 🌿

I spent the summer growing sweet potatoes in my GreenStalk vertical planters here in Las Vegas, and the vines were absolutely incredible!

But did all that beautiful growth translate into a worthwhile harvest? 👀

Between the desert heat, a surprise storm, and a few unexpected lessons, this experiment gave me plenty to think about!

🎬 The full harvest video premieres TODAY on YouTube!

Come see what happened, what I learned, and why I’m already planning an even bigger experiment next summer!

🍠🌿 The vines were HUGE… but was the harvest worth it?

I grew sweet potatoes in my GreenStalks through the brutal Las Vegas summer, and the results might surprise you!

Join me TOMORROW, Sunday, October 18, on YouTube as I reveal my harvest, what I learned, and what I’m doing differently next year!

🌱 October planting season is here in Las Vegas!

While gardens in colder climates may be winding down, here in the desert we’re stepping into one of the most exciting growing seasons of the year.

In my new What to Plant & Do in October video, I’m sharing what can go into the garden now, what I’m planting in my own Zone 9A garden, and the garden jobs I’m tackling as we transition out of our long, hot summer.

We’re talking cool-season vegetables, flowers, succession planting, garden maintenance and a few things that make gardening in Las Vegas a little different from simply following a generic Zone 9 planting calendar.

The full October Fall Planting Guide is now on Curious Greens YouTube. 🌿

If you’re gardening in Las Vegas or another hot, dry climate, come garden with me. And if you know another desert gardener trying to figure out what to plant this month, share this with them!

I have not perfected starting onions from seed. This is my second year giving it a try. They are not impressive. So I tossed them out and ordered a sampler pack of starts from Dixondale Farms. They were reasonably priced at $17.50 for 48 onion plants (more than enough for us) and will deliver right on time for transplanting.

In the meantime, I’m editing my next video, What to Plant and Do in October | Las Vegas Zone 9A.

Stay tuned.

September in the desert garden means it’s time to start thinking about what’s happening under the soil. 🌱🥕

I’m direct sowing my fall root crops, including carrots, beets, radishes, parsnips and daikon, and taking you along as another piece of the fall garden begins.

Gardening in Las Vegas means learning that the calendar and the weather don’t always agree. It may still feel like summer outside, but there are seeds that can go into the ground now for the cooler months ahead.

And one of my favorite things about growing root vegetables? You do all this work, stare at what appears to be an empty patch of dirt for weeks, and just have to trust that something wonderful is happening underneath. 😂

The new video is up on Curious Greens YouTube. Come garden with me!

What root crops are you growing this fall?

I grew this just to cut it down. 🌱

This buckwheat wasn’t planted for a harvest. I grew it as a cover crop to protect the soil, attract pollinators and add organic matter back into the bed.

Now that summer is ending, I’m harvesting what remains, clearing the bed and chopping the buckwheat down to work it into the soil.

But what happens next? In the full YouTube video, I show the amendments I add and how I prepare this bed for fall planting.

It’s all coming out. 🌱

Some of my summer plants were still alive—but alive and productive are not always the same thing.

Fall planting season arrives quickly here in Las Vegas, so I’m harvesting what remains, removing the peppers and basil, cutting down my buckwheat cover crop, and refreshing the soil for what comes next.

Sometimes growing a new garden begins with finally allowing the last season to end.
