It’s been a little quiet on the reno front because we’ve had more pressing, and honestly much more exciting needs! We celebrated one son’s marriage to his beautiful bride October 2 and will celebrate our other son’s wedding to another amazing daughter-in-law, on November 21! We did find ourselves with a rare weekend at home and tackled half finished projects today, including re-seeding some grass, laying the remainder of a brick border and brick wall and painting doors to become sliding barn doors for our primary bedroom closet. Nope, these projects still aren’t complete, but it did feel good to make baby steps in our progress at home! Now onto more wedding planning! ❤️

Lots done this week! Garage door rehab complete and more mortar progress! So thankful for my summer off!!!

Mortar is done and the mantle beam is ready to go up! I was going for a German schmear style for the mortar, but ended up leaving more color than originally planned because I loved the color and texture of the brick. These are 1/2 in brick veneers that a brick mason cuts from salvaged materials. The “whole bricks” on the hearth edges are just a pieced 90* with the veneers. I had to color match as close as possible, cut the turn down and then mortar in place. The schmear helps hide the joint and make them look like one piece.

I tested several (leftover from previous projects) stains on an unused piece of beam wood. I ended up going with a natural pine, topped with a grey tone (to counteract the yellow in the pine), and topped with a hint of red. 😊

The leftover of our 12 foot beam will finish out the side supports for the mantle. We had to split the 8x8 in half and trim some width off as well. They will be sanded and stained next, and will be ready to install. We’ll have to do a bit of trimming to leave a recess for the bricks and fit snugly against the wall. Thankful for John who mixed all my mortar, lugged lumber, and made my cuts! We’re making progress! Oh, and look at Daisy hauling lumber! 💪🌼
