It's a bittersweet time of year... fall is here, winter's moving in, and it's time to close our doors for the season. And yet asters, goldenrods, and a few very persistent blue lobelia are still holding on! This is a time of year when we can celebrate how variable and speciose those aster family plants are in New England, and be grateful for what they provide to native pollinators.

It's not too late to get your native plants, either! This will be our last week of semi-regular greenhouse hours, as well as our last market of 2026.

Monday 10/12, Weds 10/14, and Fri 10/16 I will be at the greenhouse (29 Sawyer Hill Rd, Berlin, MA) from 10am to 4pm. You might also catch me there at other hours as I work on late season tasks. If the door to greenhouse 4 is open, or there's a "native plant sale" sign outside, I'm open!

Saturday 10/17 is our last market of the season, with Grow Native MA at their headquarters in Lexington -- right on the battle green, at 7 Harrington Rd, Lexington, MA. There will be NINE native plant nurseries there from 10am to 3pm, including Blue Stem Natives, Lady Fern Farm, Tree Talk Natives, Oakhaven Sanctuary, and more. I hear there will also a bakery and an artist doing block prints of nature art on t-shirts. Exciting!

Catch us before we hibernate for the winter! (... okay not really. I'll be busy with seed collection, cleaning, and sowing all winter).

Fall is coming! Have you got all your plants in the ground yet?

This week we'll be at the greenhouse Tues 10/6, Weds 10/7, Fri 10/9, and Sat 10/10 -- with Saturday being our giant end-of-season sale! All times are 10am-4pm, at 29 Sawyer Hill Rd, Berlin, MA.

(With any luck, the permanent sign I ordered will arrive by Saturday, too!)

Drop me an email if you'd like me to reserve any plants for pickup at the sale - [email protected].

Look what I found! I believe this is racemed milkwort (Senega polygama). (Or Polygala polygama, if you ask Go Botany). Either way, it's a new-to-me northeast U.S. native.

How did I discover this? Um... I unknowingly pulled it up while w**ding. Once I had, I immediately was intrigued by those white nodes on the roots! I snapped a few pics and uploaded it to iNat, which gave me that tentative ID of racemed milkwort. It also taught me that those nodes are *underground flowers* -- what are referred to as cleistogamous flowers.

Cleistogamous flowers are flowers that never open and which are self-fertile. Several well known taxa, like Viola (violets), have cleistogamous flowers. Because these don't need to attract any pollinators, they are inconspicuous or non-showy, and -- in this case -- are underground. I presume that once they pollinate themselves, they develop into a fruit with seeds that are conveniently plant themselves!

The non-cleistogamous flowers at the top of the plant were already setting seed, so I popped off a few seed pods and saved them for sowing next year. I also put the plant back in the ground -- although since it's apparently a biennial, this one is probably at the end of its life.

Do you know anything about this species? Is my/INat's ID correct? Would love to learn more!

Business hours at the greenhouse will be limited this week (beginning 9/27/2026), due to my crazy schedule! Catch me Monday 9/28 or Tuesday 9/29 during the usual 10am-4pm hours, or on Weds 9/30 between 10am and 1:30pm. As always, the address is 29 Sawyer Hill Rd in Berlin, MA.

If none of these hours or times work for you, do reach out to me at [email protected] to discuss scheduling an appointment to shop or pickup plants. I can accommodate this at the Berlin location or at my home in Lunenburg. The selection of plants varies between the two locations, so do check out the Buy Plants page on our website (link in bio/profile) so you know what to expect.

Have a great week, and stay dry out there!

The forecast is looking scary out there! Since I literally live, er, work in a glass house, I'm not taking my chances with any thrown stones.
.. yeah, I tortured that metaphor, didn't I?

We'll next be open Mon 9/28 and Tues 9/29, from 10am to 4pm. Find us at 29 Sawyer Hill in Berlin, MA!

Was poking around my property collecting seeds yesterday, and wanted to share a few pics.

(1) Blue wood aster (Symphyotrichum cordifolium), getting photobombed by some bluestem/wreath goldenrod (Solidago caesia). This is in the "pollinator patch" I planted from a Native Plant Trust kit! I've been saying I need to buy more blue wood aster seed for next year -- it's one of my most popular! -- but I think I'm going to just collect this seed when it's ready.

(2) Some species of Lycoperdon (puffball). Growing terrestrially, and only about 3-4cm across (as measure by my finger tattoo, lol). I believe these are edible, but it's so small and singular I wouldn't even bother.

(3) Fading blooms/seed head of a Eutrochium sp. (joe-pye w**d) that volunteered in the swamp. Not great light there, so it's pretty compact. As I understand it the best way to distinguish spotted vs. coastal plain joe-pye is by counting the number of florets in a head, and I didn't stop to do this. (Blame the mosquitoes!) I have so much joe-pye seed I don't need to collect this, lol.

(4) Some species of buglew**d (Lycopus), maybe northern buglew**d (Lycopus virginicus). Might be worth collecting seed, if I can ID it to species level. Right now I only grow Lycopus americanus (from Prairie Moon seed).

The goldenrod blooms are popping and so is the greenhouse! This week (beginning 9/20/26) the greenhouse will be open Tues 9/22, Thurs 9/24, Fri 9/25, and Sat 9/26. As always the address is 29 Sawyer Hill Rd, Berlin, MA, and I'll be there from 10am to 4pm each day! Luckily it's starting to cool down for the season, so it's somewhat more temperate in the greenhouse these days.

If you'd like to check the availability of species, see the Buy Plants link on our profile page/bio. And if you'd like to reserve plants for pickup, or schedule a pickup when I'm not otherwise in the greenhouse, feel free to reach out to me at [email protected].

(I promise my schedule will become something more regular... uh, well, by next season, at least).

Have a lovely week, and enjoy the goldenrods and asters while they... last(er) 😆
