Root 11 Native Plant Nursery

09/19/2026

It’s always nice to have a sale at home. This was the 3rd year selling at Hopkins Green. Special thanks to VA Native Plant Society, Rockbridge Master Gardeners, and Friends of Brushy Hills for joining us!

Plants are going quick, and we’re running low on many plants (and completely out of others)! We’ll be in Staunton next Saturday for our final in-person sale of the season. Preorder now for that sale to make sure you get what you’re looking for!

Next week looks like a beautiful one for planting! If you can’t make the Staunton sale, you can still preorder for local pickup! Online inventory has been updated!

The calm before the storm.

Thanks to everyone who came out today in Roanoke, and a big thank you to Golden Cactus Brewing and Wild Ones Roanoke Region Chapter for hosting and organizing such an awesome event! We enjoyed chatting with everyone, and what a treat to have a fresh Oktoberfest afterwards. We can’t wait to come back!

Spicebushes are beautiful shrubs, but it’s just as beautiful to watch them serve as a food source for caterpillars like this Spicebush Swallowtail. I’ve been checking in on this little dude for the last week. They grow up so fast 🥲

The Rockbridge Community Festival was a nice start to the fall planting season. I enjoyed talking with folks and showing off some beautiful native plants. Looking forward to the next event— the Wild Ones plant swap and shop in Roanoke, 9/13!

The Fall Sale Lineup is finally out! This year we’re focusing on quality over quantity. I’m looking forward to returning to both Staunton and Roanoke, and to celebrate 2 years of Root 11 at Hopkins Green!

Check out the website for more info on each of these events. I’ll be posted more here throughout the season as well. You can preorder for pickup at any event starting a week out.

Some late season flowers are beginning to bloom here at the nursery, and some are almost there! These flowers provide an essential nectar source for our native pollinators as they prepare for the winter (or their migration). Make sure they stop at your garden by adding some to your landscape!

1. Purple-Headed Sneezeweed (Helenium flexuosum)
2. Blue Mistflower (Conoclinium coelestinum)
3. Woodland Sunflower (Helianthus divaricatus)
4. Blue Cardinalflower (Lobelia siphilitica)
5. Indian To***co (Lobelia inflata) — going to seed
6. Sideoats Grama (Bouteloua curtipendula)
7. Appalachian Ironweed (Vernonia glauca) — about to bloom!
8. Wild Basil (Clinopodium vulgate) — past bloom, but dang these seed heads are gorgeous!

(Now taking o reorders for Rockbridge Community Festivals!)
