Hang the rod higher than feels right.

Mount it close to the ceiling and extend it several inches past the window frame on each side. The window reads taller, the wall reads wider, and the panels stack against the wall so the glass stays clear when they're open. A rod set at the top of the window frame does the reverse and shortens the whole wall.

Window treatments change the proportions of a room faster than almost any other single move.

One wall was standing between this primary bath and an entirely different room.

We removed it.

The wall had separated the shower from the toilet. Without it, light moves through the whole space. A white oak vanity with detailed millwork anchors the room, paired with marble floors and walls and a statement pendant.

The client wanted modern, but still warm. Texture and color mattered. An abstract, mural-inspired grasscloth wallpaper brings all three together.

Three questions decide whether your kitchen needs a remodel or a reface.

Does the layout work for how you actually cook and move?
Are the cabinet boxes solid, no water damage, no sagging shelves, no failing hinges?
Are you comfortable keeping the footprint you have?

Three yeses may mean new doors, new finishes, and a kitchen that looks like a different room without a demolition phase.

Any no is a sign that refacing may only delay the remodel you actually need.

You did not sign up for the previous owner's decisions.

The layout, the lighting, the finishes: none of it was chosen for you. It was chosen for someone else's family, someone else's habits, someone else's idea of how a kitchen gets used. You've just been living around it.

Ask the real question: was this room built for how you live now, or for how a stranger lived then?

If it's the second one, the fix is often smaller than a full remodel and more specific than a new paint color.

Most rooms rely on one layer of light. Everything gets equally bright, so nothing looks good.

A room needs three layers: ambient light for the whole space, task light where you cook, read, or work, and accent light that gives walls and shelves some depth.

Put each layer on its own dimmer and the same room works at 7 a.m., at dinner, and at 9 p.m. with the lamps on.

Lighting is the last thing most people plan and the first thing they feel.

When a room feels off, check the scale before you change the style.

A rug that stops short of the sofa makes the seating float. Art that's too small for the sofa looks like an afterthought. A pendant that's too narrow for the table gets lost.

A few guidelines to start from: every seat gets its front legs on the rug. Art runs about two-thirds the width of the furniture beneath it. A fixture over a table measures half to two-thirds of the table's width.

Size first. Then style.

Seven years ago, we refreshed this Aurora home. This year, the client came back for something completely different, and we didn't touch the kitchen layout.

The perimeter cabinets kept their footprint and were refaced in stained white oak with reeded doors. The island went to a black painted finish that changes the whole room without changing a single wall.

The room looks new. The decisions underneath it held up.

Three statement walls.
Three completely different directions.

A statement wall doesn't have to mean bold color.

It can be floor-to-ceiling natural stone that gives a fireplace the visual weight it was missing. Textured grasscloth against restored millwork. Handmade tile in a deep green that sets the direction for the entire room.

Different materials.
Different personalities.
Same principle: give the room one place to make an impression.

When a client first contacts us, we ask them to show us the room they've stopped using.

Not the room they want to renovate.
The one they've stopped seeing because living with it has become easier than dealing with it.

That room tells us more about what the house needs than any inspiration board ever could. It's usually where the layout problem lives. Or the light problem. Or the decision made twenty years ago that never quite worked and quietly shaped everything around it.

The wish list comes later.
The room that isn't working tells us where to start.

Warm metals or cool metals?

It's one of the first questions that comes up when we're narrowing down the details of a room.

Warm metals like brass, gold, and unlacquered bronze add richness and tend to develop more character over time. Cool metals like brushed nickel and chrome keep things crisp and contemporary.

Both can work beautifully. The key is knowing which direction fits the room.
