HOSTAS FROM SEED 🌱
Part 2 of 4: Prepare & Sow
Ready to sow your hosta seeds? Here are the six steps shown in our guide:
1. START CLEAN
Use clean cups with drainage holes and a watering tray. Fill the cups with fresh, fine seed-starting mix, not garden soil.
2. MOISTEN FIRST
Wet the mix evenly, then let excess water drain. The mix should feel moist throughout, not soggy.
3. LABEL EVERY CUP
Write the parent or cross and the sowing date on each cup. Keep different seed lots in separate cups so your records stay with the seedlings.
4. SPACE THE SEEDS
Spread seeds evenly. A roomy drink cup can hold about 15 seeds; use fewer in smaller cups.
5. COVER LIGHTLY
Press the seeds gently against the moist mix, then barely cover them. Use no more than ¼ inch of fine mix.
6. ADD A CLEAR DOME
Use an inverted clear cup that fits neatly inside the rim. The dome holds humidity. Keep covered cups out of direct sun.
Fresh hosta seed needs no cold stratification.
