The Atlantic giant pumpkin guessing contest is over! The gourd weighed 1,147 pounds. Lighter than expected but I am happy. The pumpkin was flat on the bottom and there were no cracks.

Thirty eight contestants clicked on the contest link for the hat and seeds. There were 433 guesses on the weight on Facebook. Winners have been notified. Thanks for participating!

Pumpkin season is winding down. But fall and winter veggies are right around the corner! Life is good!

While I was out of town, the pests really went to town on my giant pumpkin plant. The powdery mildew continued to flourish, and then spider mites started popping up. Of course the old standby aphids were there too. This pretty much took out the plant. There was a little bit of green left when I got back from my trip. I’m pretty sure the pumpkin grew as much as it would have anyway. In any case, I’m removing all of this dead vegetation and taking it to the dump this afternoon, I will cut and weigh the pumpkin and then get the seeds!

It is time. This giant pumpkin survived while I was in India for more than a week. The plant is done and it is time to cut this off and weigh it. So why not have a guessing contest?

Moving a giant pumpkin is a science! Here is a quick behind-the-scenes look at how we get these monsters out of the patch and onto the trailer.

    •    Step 1: Cover the pumpkin to shield it from any accidental bumps or drops.
    •    Step 2: Assemble the giant tripod and center it right over the top.
    •    Step 3: Hook up the chain hoist and the weighing scale.
    •    Step 4: Secure the pumpkin using a heavy-duty pumpkin lift ring.
    •    Step 5: Lift, weigh, inspect, and set it down safely onto a pallet on the trailer.

With good access, the entire process takes less than an hour from start to finish.
