Work & Play Studio | El Sereno

The flex-studio ADU type continues to surprise us.

For this El Sereno couple, one space needed to do a lot: work from home, movie nights, hobbies, game nights, occasional guests, and plenty of storage.

The challenge was making all of those uses feel natural within one cohesive space.

We designed a space for easy, everyday use with a dedicated standing desk, custom cabinetry for work and hobbies, a central game table, space for their drums and bikes, and a sleeper sofa for overnight guests.

Large sliding doors open the main room onto a cedar deck, extending the space into the backyard. Inside, the cabinetry keeps everything organized without making the room feel overly built-in.

One space, many ways to use it. Thoughtful design makes it work.

A home rooted in its surroundings.

Deep covered porches, shingle siding, and carefully considered heritage details give this home a distinctly Southern California Craftsman character.

The connection to the outdoors carries through every detail, from the generous front garden to the covered porch and outdoor dining space.

Native, drought-tolerant planting and river rock create a landscape that feels established, while the warm material palette keeps the architecture grounded and inviting.

A thoughtful balance of craft, comfort, and connection to place.

A studio under the oaks.

We reimagined this Bungalow Heaven backyard with a flexible garden studio. Part guest house, part office, and an easy switch between the two. Custom cabinetry hides a built-in Murphy bed and multi-functional kitchenette for the workday or week-long stay.

The vaulted ceiling and skylights help make the space feel larger than it is, with ample daylight and a seamless connection to the new deck and native landscape designed by

From the first sketch to the final walk-through, Otto brings design and construction together under one roof.

Introducing Atwater Village Courtyard, a project designed to create space, privacy, and flexibility for years to come.

The homeowners came to us with a clear goal: replace a deteriorating structure with a thoughtfully designed home that could generate rental income while preserving the backyard they loved. By positioning the new home at the rear of the property, both residences enjoy their own distinct outdoor spaces while maintaining privacy and a strong connection to the landscape.

Inside, vaulted ceilings, a kitchen skylight, and carefully placed clerestory windows fill the home with natural light. A subtle compression-and-release sequence through the hallway makes the main living spaces feel even more expansive, while the bathroom continues the theme with a skylight above the shower and a restrained, timeless material palette.

Every decision was developed alongside the homeowners—from the proportions of the rooms to the outdoor layout, storage, and finish selections. Materials were chosen to echo the existing home, creating a cohesive architectural language across the property.

Designed for flexibility, privacy, and longevity, it's a home that feels as though it has always belonged.

Introducing Dinner Parties & Mom.

A Hollywood Hills project designed around connection, entertaining, and effortless indoor-outdoor living.

The homeowner wanted a space that could seamlessly support everything from quiet mornings to weeknight dinners with friends, while feeling like a natural extension of the property and surrounding landscape.

Thoughtful design isn't just about creating beautiful spaces. It's about creating spaces people want to spend time in.

Introducing Photo Studio & Guest House.

A Westchester project designed for creativity, flexibility, and everyday use.

For a creator and author, natural light was essential. Vaulted ceilings and strategically placed skylights fill the interior with light throughout the day, creating an environment equally suited for focused work, photography, hosting guests, or simply enjoying a quiet moment.

A carefully curated material palette brings warmth and character to the space, including custom white oak cabinetry, engineered white oak flooring, brass fixtures, custom tilework, and thoughtfully selected appliances. Every finish was chosen to complement the recently renovated main residence, creating a cohesive architectural language across the property.

Behind the clean lines and bright interiors, thoughtful engineering and careful site planning helped overcome complex structural and drainage challenges, ensuring the finished space is as durable as it is beautiful.

Designed around how it will be used. Built to feel like it has always belonged.

Introducing La Crescenta Retreat.

Thoughtful design starts with understanding the place, the people, and how a home will be lived in. Nestled in the foothills of La Crescenta, in unincorporated LA County, this project reflects Otto's approach to creating spaces that balance beauty, functionality, and long-term livability.
