In today’s Financial Times, two houses by Bestor Architecture in the Palisades

Rebuilding LA, the Eames Way
The design studio on the Eames House lot is now given over to a display of architectural models. They’re previews of the Case Study: Adapt programme, a new iteration of the initiative that helped birth the Eames House. Under its umbrella, 10 LA-based firms, including Bestor Architecture and Marmol Radziner, are working on homes for 16 families. All of them will be 3,000 square feet or less — in a fire-endangered area, bigger is not always better when it comes to new homes, especially when the lot sizes are half an acre or smaller.

Architect Barbara Bestor, who has earned renown for her playful riffs on SoCal modernist design, is working on two CSA projects, both with empty-nester families. One couple has opted to build a 3,000 sq ft home; around 25 per cent smaller in footprint than the previous structure. “A lot of people are downsizing; a rebuild to suit the last third of life,” notes Bestor. The other family has replaced their single dwelling with a series of three interconnected buildings, to better make use of indoor-outdoor living. Bestor loves the nod back to the original postwar programme. “It’s very much a modernist ethos, that Case Study house flow — the inside and the outside always connected.”

TONIGHT!
April 9, 6:30 pm at Helms Bakery

Symposium Sunday April 12, 1 pm

The Eaton Canyon and Palisades fires transformed the lives of so many here in Los Angeles. One year later, the rebuilding effort is well underway, but it has not been easy. Insurance, permitting, infrastructure, and inflated costs have proven challenging. No simple solution has clearly manifested. Instead, a variety of real-world approaches have developed for bringing our communities back together.

Please join us as we take account of some of the best architectural projects permitted and being constructed in the city and county of Los Angeles. On exhibit are large-scale models, renderings, and plans. Engage in a conversation of varied building approaches alongside a discussion from our grass-roots leaders spearheading change within our city and county.
