On Main Street in Louisa, Kentucky, there's a hardware store that has quietly outlasted nearly every other business that ever opened around it. 🔨

The building got its start as a blacksmith shop and general merchandise store, opened by Thomas Snyder after he arrived in Louisa in 1872. His brother Augustus joined him a few years later, learned the blacksmith trade himself, and by 1879 the brothers had turned it into a proper hardware store. Augustus went on to become mayor of Louisa and helped pave the town's streets. The store changed hands a couple of times over the following decades before Lafe Wellman bought it in 1919 and gave it the name it still carries.

Here's the wait what: the Victorian storefront you'd see walking past today is largely the same one from more than a century ago, with its original wood framed windows, ornamental metal molding, and pressed tin cornice intact, enough that the National Register of Historic Places describes it as a textbook example of small county seat Victorian commercial architecture.

The store's own sign has carried the same line for years: "Since 1879 because of you," a nod to just how long this one building has been serving the same Main Street.

Did your family ever shop at Wellman Hardware, or do you remember another business in Louisa that's been around just as long? 🧰
