Bluegrass Testing Lab is proud to participate in a nationwide CAPRI study evaluating how reheating and aging of asphalt mixtures may affect Balanced Mix Design (BMD) quality assurance testing. Our laboratory tested multiple samples of the same asphalt mix using different conditioning procedures and IDEAL-CT testing, with the results submitted to CAPRI for the nationwide study.

BMD focuses on how asphalt mixtures will perform in the field, not simply whether they meet basic specifications. For motorists, this can mean longer-lasting, smoother roads with better resistance to cracking and rutting, fewer maintenance disruptions, and better value from pavement investments.

How well does asphalt bounce back?

That’s what we’re finding out with an elastic recovery test.

We stretch the asphalt binder, cut it, and measure how much it pulls back together. This tells us how elastic the binder is and how well it can recover after being stretched, which is important because asphalt binder is constantly exposed to pulling, pushing, and movement.
