A slate roof is designed to shed water through the careful overlap of each individual piece. ⚒️

Proper headlap—the distance one slate extends beyond the slate two courses below—is essential to keeping water away from nail holes and the roof deck. The correct layout depends on the roof’s slope, slate size, and exposure.

Underlayment provides secondary protection, but it is not a substitute for correctly sized, spaced, and installed slate.

Some before & after shots of a repair last week. Previous "roofer" tried to install an EPDM membrane over this small bump-out roof. After it continued to leak, the homeowner reached out to us to save the day! Removed the rubber membrane and 6 tubes silicone, Installed a new copper flat-lock roof, and replaced 26' of Douglas Fir wood gutter. This roof is good to go for 80 years! Don't let a cheap price and short availability fool you, go with the experts!

Copper flat-lock roofing is a dependable solution for low-slope areas where traditional slate cannot provide adequate water protection. ⚒️

Individual copper pans are carefully fabricated, locked together, and soldered at the seams to create a continuous protective surface. Flat-lock copper is commonly used on low-slope porch roofs, dormers, dead valleys, and other complex transitions.

Beyond its durability, copper complements natural slate and develops a distinctive patina as it ages.

Roofing cement may slow a leak temporarily, but it is rarely a lasting repair for a slate roof. ⚒️

Heavy tar patches can hide deteriorated metal, cracked slate, or failed joints without correcting the underlying problem. As the material ages and becomes brittle, water may find a new path—and the buildup can make proper repairs more difficult.

Removing failed patching and repairing the damaged slate or flashing addresses the source while preserving the surrounding roof whenever practical.

Here’s a job we completed after another “roofer” applied a coat of roofing cement to a valley to try to fix a leak. The valley continued to leak, and we were called in to assess and repair the situation. With a new 20oz copper valley installed, this homeowner has peace of mind for the next 80 years! Don’t trust the roofers with a pickup truck and a bucket of tar, call The Slate Guys for a professional repair for your historic roof.

Roof-to-wall transitions depend on properly installed step flashing. ⚒️

Where a slate roof meets a dormer, sidewall, or other vertical surface, individual pieces of flashing should be integrated with the slate courses so water is directed onto the roof—not behind the wall covering.

The upper edges must also be protected by properly installed counterflashing or siding details. When these components are missing, exposed, or covered with sealant, leaks can develop even when the surrounding slate remains serviceable.

Historic slate roofs often include details that were designed to be seen—not just to keep the building dry.

Scalloped courses, clipped corners, contrasting colors, and decorative patterns reflect the craftsmanship and architectural style of the original roof. Before repairs or restoration begin, these details should be documented so replacement slate can be properly sized, shaped, and positioned.

Preserving the original pattern helps maintain the building’s historic character while restoring dependable weather protection.

A copper ice belt adds protection where winter conditions can be hardest on a roof—the lower edge near the eaves. ❄️
When melting snow refreezes, ice can hold water above the roof’s normal drainage path. A properly fabricated copper ice belt creates a durable, watertight surface in this vulnerable area and integrates naturally with slate roofing.
An ice belt does not prevent ice dams, but it can provide valuable protection against water backing up beneath the slate.

Custom copper valley work in progress. ⚒️
Valleys carry a concentrated amount of water from intersecting roof sections, making proper fabrication and installation especially important. Here, new copper flashing is being carefully fitted around the slate-covered dormers to provide dependable drainage while preserving the roof’s historic character.
The clean copper will naturally develop a beautiful patina as it ages.

A proper slate repair is about more than sliding a new piece into place. ⚒️
When surrounding slates remain serviceable, a correctly sized slate hook can be used to secure an individual replacement without unnecessarily disturbing a larger section of the roof. The replacement slate must also match the existing size, thickness, and exposure so it sits properly within the surrounding courses.
Small repair details make a meaningful difference in preserving a historic slate roof.

The ridge is one of the most exposed areas of a slate roof. It takes the full force of wind, rain, snow, and temperature changes year after year.

Properly fabricated copper ridge metal protects the joint where the roof slopes meet while providing a clean, traditional detail that complements natural slate. Copper also develops a distinctive patina as it ages.

Small details like this play an important role in the long-term performance of a historic roof.

A few damaged slates doesn’t mean the entire roof needs to be replaced. ⚒️

When the surrounding slate remains serviceable, individual broken or missing pieces can often be carefully removed and replaced with properly sized, color-matched slate. This targeted approach helps stop leaks while preserving as much of the original historic roof as possible.

Slate roofs are built for longevity—but the quality of the repair matters. Our teams are thoroughly trained in the preservation of historic roofs, and share the same passions to keep your slate roof around for years to come.
