Garlic and shallot seed is here! 🧄

Thanks to everyone who pre-ordered! I’ve sold out of a few varieties, but I still have Dutch red shallots and I restocked on the Nootka Rose garlic, plus Chesnok Red and Inchellium Red.

Plant when weather has cooled considerably, maybe mid to late October. Such an easy “winter” crop to grow and next spring you’ll have garlic scapes and fresh home grown garlic and shallots.

Large, organic and locally grown “seed garlic”

Organic and local Dutch Red shallots! Divide bulbs and plant about twice as deep as the size of the bulb. Crispy fried shallots anyone?

Thanks to everyone who pre-ordered! Message me to arrange pick up.

Time to seed some cover crops! I’m excited to try these red flowered fava from Siskiyou Seeds

Fava beans are one of my favorites because they are so easy to plunk into the soil around existing plants. I even use them in pots and seed them before I remove the summer crops. Legumes help build healthy soil over winter. Check out my recent blog post all about growing cover crops!

Have you tried growing a cover crop? If not, start with just a small area to test out different things. Crimson clover and field peas are my other top picks for urban gardens.

Happy fall from the GRT nursery! 🍂

Fall is the best time to plant perennial trees and shrubs. Get them planted now and mama nature does the watering. And now through the end of September all fruiting trees and shrubs are up to fifty percent off.

Plant now and by next summer you’ll be enjoying fresh blueberries from your yard! 🫐

I think we all agree that school gardens are crucial to seeding a healthy future for all? And nothing brings me more joy than supporting school gardens and the parents and teachers who keep them growing all year! 🥇 🏆

Last week I visited Beverly Park Elementary school garden and donated some fall starts to Stacy, a parent and a dedicated garden steward. Keeping a garden this large growing over summer is a labor of love and dedication to having a full garden when kids return to school this month. Stacy also volunteers her time to host open garden days during recess/lunch, helping kids plant, harvest and taste while learning about pollinators and soil and so much more.

If you’re interested and able to help at Beverly Park please message me for Stacy’s contact info. You can also reach out via their page BigDog Garden

If you’re a parent or teacher at a local (Snohomish County/North Seattle area) school garden and would like a free garden consultation please message me!

This is why I grow Italian Heirloom tomatoes every year. Makes me feel like I could win a prize at the county fair. 🏆 🥇

I often hear people say they can’t grow full size tomatoes in the Puget sound, but they just haven’t bought their starts from me. :) I grow using all organic and local seed.

⚠️🌧️ Harvest before heavy rains: we are forecasted to get heavy rain for the next several days here so it’s best to harvest your ripe and nearly ripe tomatoes before then. Otherwise your fruit will split open and have a watered down flavor. Fruit will continue to ripen indoors.

Remember that purple sprouting broccoli I harvested last spring? Now is the time to get it planted! 🥦

I have four or six packs of purple sprouting broccoli ready now along with lots of other greens, giant leeks, kale, cauliflower, and more all grown using organic seeds and soil. Just plunk them in wherever you’ve got some open space in the garden!

And, don’t miss my upcoming class this Saturday at the Lynnwood Library 10:30-noon. Lots of time for discussion and we’ll have free seeds available too!

I get to meet the best people! Keith had me over for a consultation on a restoration project he’s been working on in a protected area behind his home, and design for removal of a small lawn in his front yard.

Keith has taken on this forest restoration with gusto - removing invasives, bringing in arborist chips, and replanting cleared areas. Part of the consultation was to help address some issues and make more native plant recommendations and to make an area that will be inviting to neighbors to come and enjoy some forest bathing. Such a meaningful project that will have a lasting impact on this forest and the wildlife who call it home. 😊

Lots of customers ask me how to use the plants that I sell. Aronia melanocarpa is one of the easiest to grow and use and is also beautiful in the landscape!

After the berries are juiced you can keep it in the fridge or, for longer storage, freeze into ice cubes. The ice cubes are the perfect amount added to a glass of sparking water. I like it with a lemon lime sparkling water but they are also great for adding to lemonade or hot tea.

Have you tried Aronia juice?
