Tackling a Painting Project? Here’s How to Get It Done Right

You don't need to be a pro to get a solid, clean paint job on an interior wall—you just need the right sequence. If you're knocking out a DIY accent wall or fresh coat this weekend, follow these 5 straightforward steps:

Prep the wall first. Patch any old nail holes with spackle, sand them flat once dry, and wipe down the dust. Paint won't hide bumps or dirt!

Tape off your edges. Run blue painter's tape along baseboards, door frames, and the ceiling. Press the tape down firm so paint doesn't bleed underneath.

Don't skip primer on repairs. If you patched spots or you're covering a dark color, slap on a coat of primer first so your finish coat looks even.

Cut in with a brush. Grab a 2-inch angled brush and paint a border around all the edges and corners where the roller won't reach.

Roll it out. Work in overlapping "W" patterns across the wall to keep a wet edge and avoid roller marks. Two thin coats always beat one thick, sloppy coat.

Handyman Tip: Peel your painter's tape back at a sharp angle while the second coat is still slightly damp. If you let it dry completely, you risk pulling the fresh paint right off the wall!
