🚨 THE LOLLIPOP LANDSCAPE BANDIT STRIKES AGAIN! 🌳🍭
Cyrus caught the notorious Lollipop Landscape Bandit red-handed, attempting to turn another innocent shade tree into a giant lollipop! 😂
Fortunately, after a little education, the bandit had a change of heart and agreed to start pruning trees for their HEALTH, not just their appearance!
So, what's the RIGHT way to prune a shade tree?
Proper pruning should encourage a tree's natural growth habit, improve structural integrity, and promote a healthy, well-developed canopy.
• Manage competing leaders: Most shade trees benefit from a strong, dominant central leader. Identify competing leaders and selectively reduce or remove them when appropriate to encourage better structural development.
• Address crossing and rubbing branches: Branches that rub against each other can damage bark and create opportunities for decay. Selectively remove problematic branches while maintaining healthy structure.
• Thin selectively, not excessively: Rather than shearing the outside of the canopy into a dense shell, make thoughtful pruning cuts that maintain natural branch spacing and distribution.
• Preserve the natural canopy: A healthy canopy provides shade, protects branches from sunscald, and helps the tree produce the energy it needs to thrive. Avoid excessive interior thinning, lion-tailing, and removing too much foliage at once.
• Use proper pruning cuts: Cut just outside the branch collar when removing branches, and avoid topping, flush cuts, and unnecessary removal of large limbs.
Remember, trees aren't hedges! Constantly shaping a shade tree into a lollipop can create dense exterior growth, weak branch attachments, and a poorly developed interior canopy. Over time, this can compromise the tree's natural architecture and increase the risk of storm damage.
