The horse collar pumpkin harvest continues!

We featured these in last week’s newsletter, and we’re still enjoying watching them grow and mature. These photos show three different stages of their lifecycle, from young fruit to mature pumpkin. It’s always fun to see how something develops right there on the vine!

We’ll continue to have horse collar pumpkins available for purchase at Renfrow Hardware over the next several weeks, while the harvest lasts.

What’s producing in your fall garden right now? We’d love to hear what you’re growing!

It’s always sad to see a tomato plant leave the garden, but this Better Boy produced 280 tomatoes this year! It’s time to make room for some fall crops. Good bye tomatoes, we will see you next year!

🐛 Fall Garden Pests: What’s Eating Your Vegetables?

Fall is one of our favorite gardening seasons here in the Charlotte area! Broccoli, cabbage, collards, kale, lettuce, and other cool-weather crops are finally getting their time to shine. Unfortunately, the bugs know it, too!

Two of the most common culprits we see in fall gardens are caterpillars and aphids. The good news? You don't have to reach for the strongest insecticide on the shelf to keep them under control.

🌱 A few simple ways to fight back:
• Pick caterpillars off by hand and drop them into soapy water.
• Spray aphids off tender stems and leaves with a strong stream of water.
• Inspect your plants every few days to catch problems early.
• Remove badly damaged leaves and keep weeds under control.

🐛 Need a little extra help? Renfrow carries several garden pest treatments, including Bt products for caterpillars and neem-based options for aphids. We also have bags of ladybugs available to help put some beneficial bugs to work in your garden!

🐞 One important reminder: Not every bug is a bad bug, and a few chewed leaves aren't the end of the world. The goal is to keep pests under control while protecting the beneficial insects that help your garden thrive.

Not sure what's eating your plants? Bring us a picture or a sample, and we'll help you figure it out!

This week we have a bumper crop of "horse collar" pumpkins available from the farm. They are large and have long, meaty necks. The flavor and use of these pumpkins matches that of a butternut squash, but they are much larger. They are delicious and provide a much easier way to cut up and cook this autumn favorite in large quantities than a hard-shelled round pumpkin. They will also keep awhile if you only cut off part of the neck at a time. The wound scabs over and when I'm ready to prepare the rest, I just trim off a half-inch or so from the cut end. Matt's favorite way to serve these pumpkins is stuffed with diced apples and Neese's sausage!
