You think you can rent the machine and do it cheaper than the guy who owns one and does it for a living. Run the Saturday.

Jessica L. told us the yard rents the same skid steer for $400 a day. So we rented it on paper.

$400 for the machine. $60 for the rental protection plan, 15 percent of the rental, and you still owe 10 percent of the repair if you bust it. $250 to have it dropped and picked up. $142.96 in diesel over 8 hours at this week's EIA number. And your own Saturday at $27 an hour, $216, because that day was worth something before the machine showed up.

$1,068.96 for the day. $133.62 an hour, before the first bucket.

The contractor at $150 for 8 hours is $1,200. You saved $131, if you move dirt as fast as he does on your first day in the seat. Most people don't. Take two days to do his one and the rental runs $1,887.92 against his $1,200. You paid $688 to do it yourself.

The rental yard did not deliver an operator, insurance that covers your fence, or ten years of knowing what the dirt is going to do.

The rate is not the rental rate. It never was.
