Why are dutch ovens so popular for bread baking? Often times when a friend of ours wants to bake bread, they realize they don't own one, and they also wonder why they even need one.

Dutch ovens provide steady, enclosed heat. This creates steam around the dough, encouraging structure, lift, and a well-developed crust. It's basically the same as baking in a big oven, but on a smaller scale. A baker's cloche is an even better tool, it's basically an upside down dutch oven that doesn't require lowering a dough while avoiding touching the really hot sides of the dutch oven. But a dutch oven can be used for soups, braises, sauces, and more, while a cloche is more of a single purpose tool. So that's why a dutch oven is a worthwhile investment for bread baking and more!

By the way, we recently designed a new silicone sling, which helps lower and raise loaves into a dutch oven without burning your hands. Stay tuned for an announcement.

A first loaf pan bake, a kitchen activity with the kids, and a loaf that turned out great. Zach’s review is a lovely reminder that sourdough does not have to feel intimidating when the steps are clear and easy to follow.

We’re always glad to see Maison Fare products become part of real home baking moments!

Not sure if your dough is ready? Try the poke test. Gently press one floured finger into the dough and watch how it responds. If it springs back quickly, it may need more time. If it slowly fills back in and leaves a slight indentation, it’s likely ready for the next step.

Our step-by-step baking guide teaches you techniques like this, while showing you photos and videos (without ads) that are personalized to your preferences. It's like a personalized recipe book and baking class all in one. Check it on our website, link in bio.

Sourdough, olive oil, and something savory to bring it all together.

Our Onion Provençal dipping mix is made with gourmet chive and toasted onion seasoning for a simple, French-inspired companion to your favorite loaf. Pair it with toasted sourdough or crackers, set it out with a little olive oil, and watch how quickly it becomes the thing everyone reaches for.

It’s an easy and convenient way to add a little more flavor to the table. Available as part of our seasoning trio, or individually, on our website and on Amazon. Search for "Maison Fare onion dip mix"

Scoring is one of the easiest ways to make a loaf feel like your own.

Keep it simple with one clean cut, or play around with a design that adds a little personality before it goes in the oven. A quick chill in the fridge can help firm up the dough, making it easier to score with more control.

Every loaf can look a little different, and that’s part of the fun.

What’s your favorite way to score sourdough?

A cozy place for your loaf to live.

Our beeswax bread bag keeps sourdough covered, without hiding it away in a cabinet. Leave it on the counter, tuck in the cut side, and come back when you’re ready for the next piece.

It’s more practical, more reusable, and definitely prettier than plastic wrap.

Find it on our website at https://shop.maisonfare.com/ or shop on Amazon.

A sliced loaf is an open invitation.

Set it out with butter, jam, cheese, or whatever you like best. Keep it simple, or make it your own with the flavors and pairings you love.

That’s the fun of homemade sourdough. Everyone has their own way of serving it, sharing it, and going back for one more slice.

Let us know how you like to serve yours!

One of the things we love about homemade bread is how versatile yet simple it can be. Serve it with dinner, bring it to a friend’s house, or set it out with our Onion Provençal dipping blend and olive oil so everyone can pull off a piece. It’s an easy way to make a fresh loaf feel like part of the meal, without overthinking it.

We love that sourdough baking can be personal.

Some people like to do every step by hand. Others use a machine. Some people love the feeling of handling the dough, stretching it, folding it, and learning what it needs. Others prefer to bake the bread quickly and keep things simple.

It’s all good. You get to choose.

But for us, this is one of our favorite steps: the windowpane. When the dough stretches thin without tearing, you can see a nice, strong gluten network starting to form. That’s when we start getting excited about taking a beautiful loaf out of the oven.
