Our front flower field is going over and we’re collecting seeds for next year. Should any of you want some we have hundreds upon thousands to share. It will be interesting to see which genetics are expressed in the next generation’s field. And I’m debating on tearing her all out and having a bonfire of flowers and start prepping the field for autumn sowing or just leave her for the finches and sparrows, quail and morning dove.

Our back field is still cranking out the blooms and we have hundreds of those to share as well. Maybe that will be the field we leave for the birds.

They say nature gives, and it takes away. But I don’t know, I feel like nature is always giving.

And we’re having a BIG SALE ‘til Halloween. It’s a great time to come out.

She came to me in a fit of fever.
Camellia sasanqua ‘Setsugekka’.
setsu, Snow
getsu, Moon
ka, Flower
She’s Japanese. Bred in 1898 by a mister Jisuke Minagawa. Her genetic parentage remains secret, unknown, and her journey west is one of botanical espionage. She’s romantic, in a magnetic, full of hidden sorrow kind of way. Her flower is wrinkled silk and sparkle-dust, her leaves are glossy and dark , and her scent to be experienced, like watching her petals drop, like snow on the moon. She’s a beauty and very, very Japanesy.

In this fever-fit, all I could do was lie in bed and stare through glass, imagining her as a hedge. I couldn’t get her out of my head. So, we brought in 240 gallons of her from a specialized grower. I asked Thomas if we should get help. No, we should do it. We’ll appreciate them more. And so he and I and our two sons planted her all, like the maniacs we are. About fifty in, we became full of Snow Moon’s same hidden sorrow. But we powered through, and now she’s blooming, and one day, someday, Snow Moon will enclose us in her delicate, mysterious beauty.

We have several of her in stock at the nursery should you fall ill and get some wild dream.

The first time our youngest saw one of these things he asked me if it was half-bird-half moth. It struck me. His innocence. His simple, childlike wonder. That at 10, he still had it. I told him no, it’s an insect, a hummingbird moth, and then he wanted to know if it was rare. He’s into rare things. I told him I’d never seen one before, so it might be a little rare. I haven’t seen one since. Until yesterday, I watched this one drinking from our infamous Experimental Dahlia Patch. When I got home I showed him the video, and he said, that’s a hummingbird moth. And it struck me and made me sad, that at 11, some of it was lost.

This is me talking to Betsy about how beautiful this shipment is in an effort to lure her here. And I suppose to lure you here, too. But this how I talk to Betsy about plants, and I suppose you, too. I failed to mention the Emerald Isle Leyland Cypress, but it’s a stunner, too. Man, if your favorite color is green, like mine, this is the cat’s meow.

Mama Suk in the fall flower field asking questions and having moments with butterflies while Thomas and Grandpa talk about bees getting drunk on date juice. I love this woman. Every time we visit them in Florence, the first thing I do is take my shoes off at the front door, and we immediately head out to her garden to see what’s growing. Persimmon, Pomegranate, Dates, Asiatic Lilies, Hydrangeas, Dahlias, Datura, Clematis, Scarlet Rosemallow, Wild ferns she dug up from Reedy Creek and transplanted, etc et al. Her thumb is not just green. It’s magic. She’s magic.

Our fall u-pick field is coming along and ready for picking. Be one with a butterfly. Experience some magic.
