Transformation Tuesday in Ann Arbor! ✨

Check out this before and after of one of our recent native plant installation projects!
We transformed these areas into native havens, replacing LOTS of turf grass and creating living privacy fences. These gardens are comprised of a wide variety of native grasses and Prairie Onion (Allium stellatum), blending heights, colors, and movement to create gorgeous focal points on the property!

What are the benefits of a native garden?
💧 Less water
🐝 More bees and butterflies
🌾 And a whole lot more life!

This site is just getting started—it’ll really start to show its true potential later this fall and especially next spring. As the native plant motto goes:
“The first year they sleep, the second year they creep, and the third year they leap.” 🌱✨

Interested in a transformation like this? We offer custom native plant designs, installations, and stewardship—message us on Facebook, send us an email or text, or give us a call to get started! 💚

Native Plant of the Week: Common Milkweed (Asclepias syriaca) 🌿🦋

For our last Native Plant of the Week post of the season, we're highlighting a true native plant favorite: Common Milkweed! This hardy native perennial is an essential plant for supporting Monarch butterflies, serving as a host plant for their caterpillars. Its fragrant summer blooms attract a wide variety of bees, butterflies, and other beneficial insects, making it a pollinator garden powerhouse. This time of year, keep an eye out for its fluffy seeds drifting along roadsides as the seed pods split open and release their contents! Common Milkweed spreads through underground rhizomes, forming colonies that are perfect for naturalized areas, meadows, and larger native plant gardens.

Why we love it:

• Monarch essential: Provides food for Monarch caterpillars and supports their life cycle. 🦋
• Pollinator favorite: Its fragrant blooms attract a diversity of bees and butterflies. 🐝
• Easy to grow: A hardy, adaptable perennial that thrives in sunny areas. ☀️
• Fluffy seeds: Its silky, parachute-like seeds are a fun sign of fall and a familiar sight along Michigan roadsides. 💚

As we wrap up our Native Plant of the Week series for the season, thank you for following along and celebrating Michigan's native plants with us! We hope you've discovered some new favorites and feel inspired to incorporate more natives into your own landscapes. We'll see you next season! 🌿

Transformation Tuesday in Ypsilanti! 🪻

Check out this before and after of one of our recent native plant installation projects! We transformed this flowerbed into a native haven, removing LOTS of invasives and creating a much more attractive area alongside the house. This garden was easy to install due to the use of the tarp method where tarps had been placed down on the site a year in advance. This garden will bloom from June to October, providing a wide variety of color and flowers for pollinators throughout the seasons.

Native Plant of the Week: Palm Sedge (Carex muskingumensis) 🌿

Palm Sedge is a unique native sedge that adds beautiful texture and structure to the garden with its upright stems and palm-like foliage. It thrives in moist soils and works wonderfully in rain gardens, along pond edges, and in partially shaded areas. Its dense growth provides valuable cover for wildlife, while its foliage adds interest throughout the growing season. As a great alternative to traditional ornamental grasses, Palm Sedge is a fantastic choice for adding texture and supporting local ecosystems!

Why we love it:

• Unique foliage: Its palm-like leaves create a distinctive, tropical look in a Michigan native garden. 🌱
• Rain garden favorite: Thrives in moist soils and handles wet conditions beautifully. 💧
• Wildlife value: Provides cover for small wildlife and contributes to a healthy native plant community. 🐝
• Versatile and adaptable: Great for rain gardens, woodland edges, and other moist landscape areas. 💚

🌸 We have Palm Sedge available now! Stop by and see us at 19835 Welch Road, Milan, MI 48160. We’re open by appointment—come pick up some native color for your garden!

We had such a great time at the Science, Data, & Health Career Fair, hosted by The University of Toledo , UToledo Rocket Career Center, and UToledo College of Natural Sciences and Mathematics! 🌱✨

It was so fun connecting with students who are passionate about the environment, sustainability, and hands-on learning. We loved sharing what makes internships at Liv’s Native Nursery such a unique experience — getting up close and personal with native plants and seeing real conservation work in action.

We even had a special visit from Rocky and Rocksy, which made the day even more memorable! 🚀

We’re excited to continue our relationship with UT and welcoming more interns to Liv's Native Nursery. The future of native plants is in good hands! 🌼 💚

Transformation Tuesday in Saline! 💚

Check out this before and after of one of our recent native plant installation projects!
We transformed this hillside flowerbed into a native haven, helping to stabilize the soil while providing vital resources for wildlife.

We wanted to highlight this project in particular because it is a great example of something we always try to emphasize: tackling your native journey in bite-size chunks! For large spaces, it is easy to get overwhelmed quickly. That is why we suggest planting small portions every year—which is shown here! Next spring, we will continue to expand the garden, as well as filling in the blank spots (indicated by the flags).
