Chimney leaks can come from a variety of sources, but some of the most common culprits include:⁣

💦Rainwater. Rain may be coming in from the top of chimney due to a damaged or missing chimney cover. This is the most simple cause, so it should be checked out first.⁣
🧱Cracks in the chimney crown. The chimney crown is the masonry that covers the top of your chimney. This cover prevents water from getting into the cracks into the masonry below.⁣
💦Chimneys leaking from the inside out due to condensation.⁣
🧱Leaking bricks. Bricks that are too porous may leak if the flashing is not properly installed around them.⁣
💦Improperly installed or damaged chimney flashing.⁣

When water is the problem, obviously the first step is to track down the source of the leak. It sounds simple (and oftentimes it is), but it can sometimes be tricky to trace the problem back to its original source, especially when there may be multiple causes for the leak. ⁣

The experts at Total Chimney Care deal with chimney leaks every day. They are experienced professionals who will investigate the sources of your leak, then give you a detailed plan of action for stopping the leaks and repairing any damage. Call today to have your chimney inspected for leaks! ⁣

🔥🏡 A big risk that comes with operating a broken down firebox is the increased risk of house fires. The same openings that poisonous gases can escape through could also provide a place for flames to escape into your household, causing any adjacent woodwork to eventually catch on fire. As you can imagine, this could result in quite a bit of property damage, which is a lot more costly to address than simply investing in an affordable fireplace repair.⁣

Minimize your family’s risk of injury by counting on our crew to help you out with every step of this process. We’ll have you all set and ready to use your fireplace in no time!⁣

If you are at all concerned about the condition your structure is in, then don’t hesitate to reach out to our team. As CSIA certified sweeps, we urge all homeowners to invest in an annual inspection to ensure their chimney and fireplace stay in the best shape possible year after year.⁣

If you’re ready to get yours scheduled, give us a call today. We’d love to hear from you! 👍🏼⁣

What’s So Great About Pellet Stoves⁉️⁣

Controllable & Consistent Heat: Maintaining and controlling the temperature of your fire doesn’t have to involve work. With a Pellet Stove, pellets are automatically fed into the fire, keeping your fire effortlessly going. You can use the feeder settings to control the temperature of your fire, so all you have to do is sit back and relax.⁣

Budget-Friendly: As a fuel, pellets are relatively inexpensive, and since they are made from a renewable resource, they’re readily available year-round. You can also buy pellets in large or small amounts, so you only have to pay for what you need.⁣
Efficient: Because pellets are densely-packed, very little fuel is wasted during the combustion process, and a high level of heat is produced.⁣

Environmentally-Friendly: Pellets are made of densely packed wood shavings, making use of what would otherwise be thrown away. As a waste product that is in constant supply, pellets are a great way to enjoy a fire without the guilt. Additionally, pellets are so densely packed and dried that they burn much cleaner and produce much less ash than wood.⁣

Convenient & Easy To Store: Because pellets are small and can be bought in large or small amounts, they’re much easier to store and load than wood logs.⁣

01/20/2020

The firebox is the part of your fireplace at the floor level of the room where you place the wood to be burned. Just like other parts of your home, your firebox can deteriorate over time. As houses age, they will settle, creating cracks and gaps in the walls and floors. This process is exactly the same in your firebox. Furthermore, exposure to extreme heat from fires and other factors such as water leaks can cause your firebox to deteriorate even faster. The mortar holding the firebox’s bricks together can begin to crack and separate, causing gaps to open up between the bricks. These gaps can quickly become dangerous, allowing fire to escape the firebox and spread into the walls of your home.⁣

Total Chimney Care will examine your firebox and make recommendations for the best course of action. If your firebox bricks are in good condition, but the mortar is eroded, we can do something called tuckpointing. During this process, we remove the old mortar and replace it with high-temperature refractory mortar. ⁣

Does your firebox need a facelift? Call to schedule yours today! ⁣

Feeling a chill? ⛄️ It could be from a damaged chimney damper! ⁣

Is the winter chill finding its way into your home, even when you have all of your doors and windows shut tight? Cold air could be finding a way into your home through a damaged chimney damper. ⁣

A chimney damper’s primary role is to keep things from entering your home, and that includes cold air. Most chimney dampers are located within the throat of the chimney, above the firebox. They feature a metal ring around the circumference of the chimney opening, and a metal flap covers the opening.⁣

When a 🔥 is burning in the fireplace, you open the damper to let smoke escape. When your fireplace isn’t in use, the damper needs to be in the closed position to create a barrier between your home and the chimney. An open chimney damper is essentially an open window to your home. If you leave it open, or if it’s damaged, you will lose the warm air from your home out of your chimney, and you will feel cold drafts in your home as they blow down your chimney.⁣

Are you experiencing a chill inside your home? Call Total Chimney Care today! 203-874-6772 📞⁣

If you own a fireplace, you’ve probably heard your chimney company refer to creosote a number of times. If your annual inspection revealed excess creosote in your flue, then the time to have it removed is now. Avoiding sweeping services can put your home and family at serious risk, and it’s not worth taking any chances when it comes to the safety and wellbeing of loved ones. Ensure this new year is the best one yet by relying on our team of experts from start to finish. We would be happy to help you out every step of the way!⁣

Serving You & Serving our Nation! 🇺🇸⁣

As a military family, you can bet that we take pride in serving others, whether we are fighting for our country or fighting creosote in your fireplace. Our owner, Steve Sobczak, and his father are both Navy veterans, and Steve’s son, Stephen Jr., is a graduate of the US Marines. Along with this, Stephen Jr.’s other grandfather served in the Army – it clearly runs in the blood!⁣

Both Steve and Stephen Jr. have put in countless hours providing chimney care for folks throughout Fairfield and its surrounding cities, but come January Stephen Jr. will ship out to his duty station. Because of this, the team at Total Chimney Care would like to talk some time to state just how proud we are to serve both this nation and our loyal service area.⁣

Your chimney liner is absolutely critical to the safety of your heating system. Most masonry chimneys were built with an inner liner of clay tiles. Chimney liners may also be constructed out of a cast masonry mix, aluminum or stainless steel. The purpose of this liner is to keep the hot gases inside the chimney so that it does not overheat and ignite the combustible material nearby, such as the framing and walls of your house. Any openings in the chimney liner can potentially cause serious problems.⁣

⁣⁣⁣
Your fireplace and chimney masonry needs to be maintained to provide maximum safety in your home, and we can help with repair and installation to whatever degree is required.⁣

Call us to discuss what Total Chimney Care can do for you and ask about our “sweep you off your feet” guarante!⁣⁣

🔥Wood Versus Pellet🔥⁣

When it comes to deciding between a wood or pellet stove, the choice is largely personal. They are fairly close when it comes to operating costs and appearance, but here are the primary differences between wood stoves and pellet stoves:⁣

-Fuel. A wood stove, of course, depends on wood for fuel, and that means burning wood logs to heat your home. Most pellet stoves burn compressed, dehydrated sawdust pellets, though some burn biofuel, such as corn.⁣

-Cost. The average cost of fueling a wood stove for a winter is less than fueling a pellet stove. The average pellet stove requires 7.3 tons of pellets each winter, which costs around $1,825. The average wood stove burns about 6.5 cords per wood. Purchased, that would cost $1,300, though many homeowners cut and cure their own wood to fuel their wood stoves. Either is cheaper than heating a home with oil or electricity.⁣

-Care. Pellet stoves have the advantage over wood stoves when it comes to care. Woodstoves require nearly constant tending, while pellet stoves feature large hoppers to hold pellets and an automatic feeding system. That means pellet stoves can continue to heat your home while you’re sleeping, at work or even gone for a weekend.⁣

-Maintenance. Both pellet stoves and wood stoves require annual maintenance. Chimneys and stoves should be professionally cleaned and inspected at least once per year to ensure their safe operation and reduce the risk of a home fire.⁣

If you’re ready to lower your home heating bills this winter with a wood or pellet stove, visit Total Chimney Care’s online fireplace store or stop by in person at Total Chimney Care’s hearth store, The Cozy Flame. Our fireplace experts can help you pick the right heating stove to fit your home heating needs and lower your home heating bills this winter!❄️💸⁣
