The answer: roughly 6 weeks before your first hard frost. This window gives the bulb enough time to grow roots and settle in before the ground freezes, without sprouting too early.

Plant too early and you risk premature sprouting during a warm fall. Plant too late and roots may not establish before winter dormancy sets in.

🌿 Let's settle this one, because it trips up a lot of gardeners.

It depends on the bulb! Sun-hungry varieties like Tulips and Dahlias absolutely need 6+ hours of direct light, but Hosta, Bleeding Hearts, and many woodland bulbs actually prefer partial or full shade.

Planting a sun-lover in the shade, or vice versa, is one of the most common reasons gardeners see weak or missing blooms, even when everything else was done right.

✅ One quick test can save your whole fall planting.

Soggy soil is silently killing more bulbs than winter ever will. Bulbs store energy and moisture inside themselves, so waterlogged soil can cause them to rot before they even sprout.

Before you plant, grab a handful of damp soil and squeeze it. If it forms a tight, wet ball that doesn't crumble, mix in compost, sand, or grit to improve drainage.

🌱 This one small measurement decides how well your bulbs perform.

The golden rule: plant bulbs 2–3 times as deep as the bulb is tall, measured from the base.

This depth protects the bulb from temperature swings while still letting the shoot reach sunlight in time. Plant too shallow and the bulb can dry out or become vulnerable to frost damage. Plant too deep and you may see delayed sprouting or weaker blooms because the shoot uses more of its stored energy before reaching the surface.

This is a true story from 17th-century Holland, during a period now known as "Tulip Mania," when rare tulip varieties became so desirable that their bulbs traded like currency. Some even sold for the price of a canal-side home.
