Why are more homeowners choosing large-format tile for their showers?
One of the biggest reasons is the combination of a high-end appearance and fewer grout lines to maintain.
Take a look at this shower installed by The Floor 4 U.
The oversized blue marble-look tiles feature dramatic copper and gold veining, creating a beautiful, continuous appearance across the shower walls.
But large-format tile offers more than just looks.
With fewer grout joints, there's generally less grout to clean and maintain compared with smaller wall tiles.
The larger pieces also allow the natural stone-inspired patterns to stand out without being interrupted by numerous grout lines.
However, large-format tile requires careful installation.
The walls need to be sufficiently flat, the tile layout needs to be planned, and the appropriate installation materials must be used.
And here's something every homeowner should understand.
Tile and grout aren't what make your shower waterproof.
The waterproofing system behind and beneath the tile is what protects the structure from water damage.
At The Floor 4 U, we believe a beautiful shower should be built correctly from the inside out.

Does it matter which direction you install vinyl plank flooring?
Absolutely.
But there's no single direction that works best for every room.
This bedroom in Lockport features Shaw Paladin Plus in Lighthouse, installed by The Floor 4 U.
When planning plank direction, we look at more than just the dimensions of the room.
We consider how the flooring will flow into adjoining spaces, where doorways are located, the overall layout, and the manufacturer's installation requirements.
Natural light can also influence how the finished floor looks.
In this home, the same flooring continues through the upstairs areas, including the hallway and staircase landing.
That's why it's important to think about the entire installation rather than planning each room separately.
The direction of your flooring is one of those decisions that's much easier to get right before the first plank goes down.

What happens when you pull up a bathroom floor and discover serious problems underneath?

That's exactly what happened on this project in New Lenox.

We uncovered two major issues.

First, someone had cut through floor joists to make room for plumbing.

Second, the bathtub appeared to have been leaking for a long time, leaving extensive deterioration beneath the bathroom floor.

Here's why this matters.

Floor joists are structural components. Cutting them incorrectly can weaken the floor system, and long-term water exposure can make the situation even worse.

Simply covering everything with new plywood and flooring isn't the answer.

The source of the water needs to be addressed, and damaged structural components need to be properly evaluated and repaired before the floor is rebuilt.

At The Floor 4 U, we believe the work underneath your flooring is just as important as the finished floor you see.

Sometimes the most important part of a flooring project isn't pretty.

Can taller baseboards make new basement flooring look better?

They can make a noticeable difference in how the finished space comes together.

This Downers Grove basement features COREtec Galveston Oak flooring installed by The Floor 4U, along with new 5¼-inch baseboards.

The flooring creates the main transformation, but the taller baseboards give the perimeter a more substantial, finished appearance.

It’s a good example of why we pay attention to both the flooring and the details around it.

Can you install artificial grass in a basement?
Yes, and this basement in Darien shows just how creative homeowners can get with their space.
The Floor 4 U installed artificial turf to create a large indoor soccer and recreation area.
Instead of finishing the entire basement, the homeowners chose to make the space useful for activities their family enjoys.
But installing artificial turf indoors isn't as simple as rolling it over concrete.
Basement moisture, surface conditions, turf backing, and installation methods all need to be considered.
Artificial turf doesn't fix an existing moisture problem, and not every product is designed for indoor use.
This is one of those projects that shows how flooring can completely change the way a space is used.

How do you cut flooring to fit against a curved wall?

This is where scribing comes in.

Instead of trying to guess the curve, we transfer the shape of the wall onto the luxury vinyl plank and carefully cut it to follow the contour.

It’s the kind of detail that takes additional time and attention, but makes a difference in how the installation comes together.

Another look behind the scenes at the craftsmanship involved in flooring installation at The Floor 4U.

What should you consider when installing flooring around an upstairs staircase?
Quite a bit more than you might think.
For this project in Lockport, we installed Shaw Paladin Plus in Lighthouse throughout the upstairs hallway and landing.
When flooring reaches an open staircase, the installation becomes more complicated than working in a typical bedroom.
You have railing posts, exposed edges, doorways and transitions that all need to be considered before installation begins.
The flooring needs to be properly laid out, cuts around fixed objects need to be accurate, and exposed edges need the appropriate finishing details for the flooring system.
Unlike flooring installed against a wall, these areas are much more visible.
That's why we plan the entire landing before simply starting to install planks.

Can you put kitchen cabinets in a basement?
Absolutely—and they don't have to be part of a full kitchen.
For this Tinley Park basement, The Floor 4 U supplied and installed this new cabinet run with a sink and plenty of additional counter and storage space.
Cabinetry can make a finished basement much more functional whether you're creating a bar area, entertaining space, hobby area or simply looking for more storage.
But basement cabinetry should be planned just like cabinetry anywhere else in the home.
Plumbing locations, available wall space, flooring, moisture conditions and how the area will actually be used should all be considered before deciding on the layout.
Sometimes making a basement more useful doesn't require remodeling the entire space. Adding the right storage and work area can make a substantial difference.

Do hardwood floors have to be stained when they're refinished?
No.
For this hardwood refinishing project in Frankfort, we sanded the existing hardwood and used a clear finish with no stain.
Instead of changing the wood to a different color, the clear finish allows the natural tones, grain and board-to-board variation to become the finished look.
Take a look at the darker decorative border around the room too. Refinishing brought the surrounding natural hardwood back to life while allowing that existing detail to stand out again.
One thing homeowners should know: clear doesn't necessarily mean the finished floor will look exactly like freshly sanded raw wood. Different finish systems can influence the final tone.
Sometimes the best color for real hardwood is simply the color that's already in the wood.
