Since 1997, we've watched the Treasure Valley grow, and grown with it.

Nearly three decades of local freezes, windstorms, and dry winters taught us what valley trees need, and which ones thrive here.

Our neighbors, our trees.

Fall is when mushrooms and shelf-like fungi start popping up around Treasure Valley yards. Most of the ones in the lawn are harmless, but mushrooms or hard, shelf-shaped conks growing on a tree's trunk, root flare, or major roots are a different story.

These are the visible fruiting bodies of wood-decay fungi, and by the time they appear, the fungus has usually been working inside the wood for years. Depending on the species, the decay may be in the roots that anchor the tree or in the lower trunk, where strength matters most. A tree can still have a full, green canopy while the structure underneath is weakening.

A conk doesn't automatically mean a tree has to come down. Our ISA Certified Arborists identify the fungus, check how much sound wood remains, and give you an honest recommendation, which sometimes means monitoring instead of removal.

Have you spotted mushrooms or shelf fungi growing on any of your trees this fall?

Across the Treasure Valley, irrigation water shuts off in mid-October, and for many yards that means trees stop getting regular water just as they head into a long, dry winter. Valley winters often bring little moisture, and dry or frozen soil can leave roots short until spring.

Evergreens are the most vulnerable because their needles keep losing water all winter long. Trees planted in the last two or three years are close behind. A deep, slow soak from a garden hose before the ground freezes, and again during mild, dry stretches when temperatures are above freezing, helps roots go into dormancy hydrated.

Water out toward the drip line rather than right against the trunk, and let it soak in slowly so it reaches the root zone instead of running off. If you're not sure which trees on your property need extra attention this winter, our ISA Certified Arborists are glad to take a look.

Does your yard run on canal irrigation, and have you noticed evergreens browning by late winter?

Taking down a tree isn't the end; stumps can sprout suckers, attract pests, and become hazards. ArborSafe's stump removal grinds stumps and roots below grade, allowing for topsoil filling and new planting. We check for utilities and protect surrounding areas before starting. Grinding is the cleanest option for Treasure Valley yards, whether it's a recent or long-standing stump.

Is there an old stump on your property that you've been working around for years? 🌳✨

A healthy tree in the wrong place doesn't always have to go.

Late fall dormancy is a great window to transplant younger trees: a properly sized root ball, the right depth, and a better spot where it can thrive.

Before any saw starts, we talk.

Every ArborSafe job begins with a crew briefing: who's climbing, how each piece comes down, where the drop zone is, where the power lines are, and what needs protecting below.

Small job or big removal, the plan comes first.

Fast growth, weak wood.

Siberian elms, silver maples, and willows shade a lot of older Nampa, Caldwell, and Boise yards. Their brittle wood, tight branch unions, and hidden decay mean big limbs can fail even on a calm day.

Regular pruning can make a mature tree much safer.

Young, thin-barked trees in the Treasure Valley need trunk protection before winter sunscald cracks their bark.

On clear winter afternoons, low sun warms the southwest side of the trunk, and a fast temperature drop after sunset can split the bark. Young maples, lindens, honeylocusts, and fruit trees with smooth, thin bark are the most vulnerable, especially in newer open Meridian, Kuna, and Nampa subdivisions with little shade. Damage often goes unnoticed until summer, when a sunken strip of dead bark peels away and opens the tree to decay and borers.

Prevention is simple and inexpensive: after leaves drop, usually in November, wrap the lower trunk with light-colored tree wrap or a white trunk guard, and remove it in spring so it does not trap moisture or restrict growth. ArborSafe's ISA Certified Arborists help Treasure Valley homeowners identify which trees need protection and tell old sunscald damage apart from more serious trunk problems.

ArborSafe stands behind every tree job in the Treasure Valley with a simple promise: We Make Right. Anything not done the way it was agreed gets fixed on a return trip, at no extra cost and without debate.

That covers the details that sometimes appear a few days after a job: a pruning stub that should have been cut back to the branch collar, a limb that still rubs the roof after a windy afternoon, sawdust in a flower bed, or a stump that needs a little more grinding. Customers simply let the office know, and the crew comes back to finish it properly.

ArborSafe has served Nampa, Caldwell, Meridian, Eagle, and Boise since the late nineties with ISA Certified Arborists and ISA Certified Tree Workers on staff. Standing behind the work is how a locally owned company earns repeat customers and neighbor referrals across Ada and Canyon Counties.
