Sometimes the most unique Nantucket homes are hidden in plain sight. One of our favorites is called the Carriage House, originally built in 1834 as outbuilding for Henry Coffin’s brick mansion on Main Street. Tucked behind a hedge, this unassuming house is a perfect marriage of traditional Nantucket architecture and modern design. Noted architect Hugh Newell Jacobsen led a renovation of the Carriage House in the early 2000s, transforming the interior into an open, modern living space. Nantucket Looms’ Master Weaver and Partner Rebecca Peraner was called in to replicate an archival linen and ramie fabric designed by Nantucket Looms co-founder Andy Oates. Together with her team, Becky worked to weave fabrics by hand to upholster sofas at the Carriage House.
You can read more about the Carriage House project, the history of Nantucket Looms textiles, and more in “Nantucket Looms: A Legacy of Style”, soon to be in its second printing.
