Things I would NEVER do in a new build as an interior designer…
I would never pick paint colors before choosing flooring, countertops, tile and cabinetry.
I would never choose each finish separately just because I loved it. Everything needs to work together.
I would never mix warm and cool undertones without a plan.
I would never match all metals. Mixing metals in hardware, lighting, and plumbing fixtures creates a more custom look.
I would never finalize electrical before having a furniture plan.
I would never use tiny pendants over a big kitchen island.
I would never let outlets, switches or thermostats be placed without considering cabinetry, mirrors, furniture and window treatments.
I would never plan windows based only on how they look from the exterior. The interior furniture layout matters too.
I would never design a fireplace without considering the TV, furniture layout and entire wall elevation at the same time.
I would never choose tile without deciding on grout color and tile layout too.
I would never use a different flooring material in every room.
I would never choose lighting based on the online photo without checking the actual dimensions.
I would never use standard-size doors and tiny trim everywhere in a home with tall ceilings without considering the proportions.
I would never wait until construction is almost finished to start thinking about furniture.
I would never make permanent, expensive decisions based solely on what’s trending right now.
And I would NEVER make selections without going back to the original design plan. Your design boards are your roadmap—use them!
