We were called to evaluate this State Street Maple in New Lenox IL. Upon arrival we noticed premature and inconsistent yellowing, along with reduced growth throughout the canopy. Upon investigation, the tree had a noticeable girdling root strangling the lower trunk area. As you can see from the photo, this maybe 1β root was in fact doing a good amount of damage. We did some root extraction and fertilization and in time, this tree will improve in health. Trees should always have good visible root flares with taper. Many trees in our urban landscapes face this very issue due to factors such as improper planting depth and mulch volcanoes.
