Living rooms in older houses weren’t designed for the furniture we have today. There are often multiple doorways, a fireplace, and windows on two or three walls. Placing the sofa in front of a window can be one of the best ways to make the room work. Framing the window with drapery helps soften the arrangement and makes the sofa feel like a natural part of the room.

I love a good plaid! And this one works particularly well on these Baker Furniture barrel chairs, where the straight lines of the pattern contrast with the curved wood frames.

Painted cabinetry, natural wood, handmade tile, and custom metalwork. A lot of craftsmanship went into this corner, and it’s one of my favorites in this kitchen.

I realize the internet isn’t exactly suffering from a shortage of interior design content, but I’ve decided to add a little more.

After 14 years in the industry and 10 years running Sarah Cole Interiors, I’ve accumulated some opinions about houses and a few about the industry too.

I’ve also met some fascinating people, learned a lot about what goes into making a house, and developed a particular appreciation for the things that rarely make it into the finished photographs. So I’ve started a newsletter called “Things I Think About Houses.”

I have things to say, but I also respect your inbox. This will be a monthly-ish release. The first issue is out!

One of my favorite things about old houses is figuring out what to do with the spaces that were never designed for the way we live now. We tucked a bench, hooks, shoe storage, and a shelf into this narrow spot beside the stairs, then gave it enough color to feel like part of the house.

The blue chandelier was not the quiet choice, which is exactly why it works here. Against the dark woodwork and patterned paper, it gives the room a little spark without taking over.

This is one of my favorite rooms from our project, so I was especially happy to see it chosen as the lead image for the feature in the current issue of Boston Home. Our client has a wonderful art collection, and we designed this room around the painting on the left, a scene of tiled rooftops in Brazil. We’re so grateful to Jaci Conry Hogan, Jennifer Blaise Kramer and the whole Boston Home team for seeing what made this house special and sharing it so beautifully.
