Have you heard? Wilmore,Kentucky is the Ginkgo capital of America. Yes. You read that right. Who knew?

And now the latest arts and crafts festival in the region is happening today with art, live music, food, craft vendors, and more!

Springhouse Gardens delivered a whole truckload of various male Ginkgo trees (you don’t want a female Ginkgo) to a beautiful art gallery created in a newly renovated historic building in downtown Wilmore.

It’s amazing how one carefully placed tree, inside or out can just change the entire mood of the space. Come walk through the art gallery and admire each piece, of art inspired by the ancient Ginkgo tree, and then admire the living fossil nearby in each potted specimen.

Go to www.ginkgogalore.com for more information. And if you’re looking for a Ginkgo tree for your yard, you can purchase our trees today at the festival or visit our garden center this weekend. We are donating 15% of each Ginkgo tree purchased today and tomorrow to the Gingko Foundation.

Are you ready to be bewitched?

One of the simple joys of Autumn…Common Witchhazel (Hamamelis virginiana) with the spicy fragrance wafting from the yellow blooms, hidden amongst the golden leaves. You’ll notice the captivating fragrance before you see the blooms.

This native woodland shrub is at home in the sun or shade and can eventually grow into a spreading small tree of up to 10-15’ tall x 10-15’ wide. I like to use this versatile plant in shade gardens as a multi-stemmed understory tree to provide an upright accent above a carpet of native wildflowers and perennials.

And in this season of Halloween, this is a most welcome “witch” to add to your garden.

Kentucky Friends and Partners, Jessamine Habitat has been selected as the beneficiary of the Ginkgo Galore Festival which is, next Saturday the 24th right in downtown Wilmore.

We need your help and are looking to get 20 volunteers to help man the registration tables. If this is something you'd be interested in please comment below or email Leanne Prout at [email protected].

This would be a great opportunity for High school/College students needing volunteer hours or youth groups looking to have fun and support a great cause! Please consider helping!! It's going to be a blast!

We are proud to be a part of this upcoming festival!

Rain? On your Wedding Day? It’s supposed to be good luck, but we always hope that we won’t have to worry about it when we plan a wedding and reception.

At Springhouse, we always bury a full bottle of Bourbon UPSIDE DOWN to help ward off any rain, and that tradition has served us well (pun intended) over the last eleven years, only forcing us inside three previous times for an success rate of of about 98.5%

But last weekend, the remnants of Hurricane Isaias were a certainty, heading into Central Kentucky on Friday and Saturday. We waited as long as we could, but we finally had to move the wedding ceremony from the sunken garden to our 100 year-old historic to***co barn. And even though Alicia and Ryan were hoping to exchange their vows outside, they were happy to have a dry, convenient and unforgettable place to become husband and wife!

Soft lighting, soaring cathedral like rafters and warm, cozy intimate vibes set the stage for the perfect union. An easy flip with the chairs moved into the nearby tent allowed for a seamless transition for dinner and dancing.

Is it any wonder how we won an award for historic preservation from Blue Grass Trust for Historic Preservation for best adaptive reuse of an historic structure? The Barn at Springhouse is so much more than just an old barn. It’s a place where dreams come true and where the past and present join to create a bright future. Is it time to make a name change? Maybe the Chapel at Springhouse? I’ll have to start looking for a chaplain…

WEBER'S WEDNESDAY WISDOM:
Trees and shrubs require about an inch of rain a week, especially leading into winter when they need to keep roots moist and pliable when temperatures are freezing. The rain last week? Only a quarter of an inch.
Even with temperatures falling, trees and shrubs need us to help them remain hydrated, so keep your watering schedule going, especially on windy Fall days!
