The bittersweet arrival of the first frost, bringing a swift end to dahlia season

You guys, I am SO excited to share this with you! We have spent the past week transforming our greenhouse into a winter wonderland! Deb Harris The Garden • Floral Styling & Atelier created a beautiful design for us and executed it so perfectly, using materials grown right here at our farm. It turned out so much more beautiful than I ever imagined!

With some extra help from the Fam, it’s nearly complete. We have just a couple more details to add (like a vintage hot chocolate stand using our old farm stand! :)

We have designed this space for YOU to capture those special holiday photos with the family (or whoever your special people are). We will be renting it out to photographers for mini sessions or to individuals who want to bring in their photographer for a private session. If you need help finding a photographer, email us and we can help! Details are on the ‘Events’ page of our website under the ‘Photography’ tab.

The space will be available to rent as soon as next weekend. I know it’s early to think about the holidays (for some of us anyway), but we wanted to give plenty of time for creating holiday photos and for photographers to turn their photos around. The light has been so beautiful inside lately, we hope you will enjoy it!

We can’t wait to see your beautiful families back at the farm again!

The Flower House is open and full of fall bouquets! We had a frost this week, so this really is the last of the dahlias! We’re mixing them in with the first of the heirloom mums for some fresh fall vibes.

We also cut back the eucalyptus so grab some while you can! The last of the gomphrena, and the first of the dried flowers are out, lavender and delphinium. We’ll have more died stuff next week, I just ran out of time to pull them together.

New Fall Hours — we’re only open on Saturdays! No matter how many times or places I post out new hours, someone always shows up when we’re closed. Just a reminder, you can always check our website before you come. Updated hours are always posted at the top of our home page. We always end out an email to our subscribers, and I post hours as much as I can on socials. It only takes a sec to double check before you come!

Hope to see you out enjoying the picture perfect fall weather!! 🍁

Yesterday was a mad dash to preserve what we could from the gardens before first frost. Even though I tell myself not going to go crazy bringing everything in, I always do. My heart just never feels ready to let go of the garden. I feel an anxiety start to creep in, a voice inside of me saying ‘how are we going to survive the long dark winter?!’. It’s a very tough transition for me and somehow preserving as much as I can gives me hope that I’ll make it through winter.

I spent the morning in our personal garden, where we have some extra dahlias planted just for us,labeling what we want to save and cutting the remaining blooms for one last arrangement on the kitchen counter. The rest I will be sharing in our fall bouquets at The Flower House on Saturday. Open Saturday 10-4.

When you’ve lived through a drought, tried to grow and sustain life through a drought, watched the world around you burn, something as simple as a rainy day can feel like such a miracle.

Fall offers such an incredible wealth of beautiful textures and warm colors. I’m always amazed how many beautiful things we can find when we start harvesting from all the non-flowering plants. We’ll be sharing lots of these in our fall bouquets this weekend!

A reminder that The Flower House will only be open on Saturdays for the fall while we focus on our long list of fall tasks.

So much has been happening lately that I can barely keep up with sharing it all! Let’s talk about flowers first.

This weekend we cut back our dahlia plants in preparation for digging tubers. I went out to the field early before we started cutting to have my final farewell for the season, only to find the field had filled back up with blooms. Naturally I couldn’t just let those go so we have a few last buckets of dahlias to share!

We also have a row of heirloom mums in our back field that really came to life this week. The colors are just out of this world! We’re harvesting as much as we can today and tomorrow so we can cover them up before temperatures drop later this week.

Even though our busy flower season is wrapping up, we will still have fall blooms for a while. We will continue to have The Flower House open on Saturdays with lots of fall bouquets. Dahlias, heirloom mums, berries, eucalyptus, and all the fall grasses, textures, and foliages.

Dried flowers, dried lavender, fall wreaths, and other new goodies will also be making their way out to The Flower House as we (finally) transition over to fall. We’re also in the process of potting up amaryllis and paperwhites for the holiday season. Lots of new things to come!

The Flower House will be open on Saturdays 10-4 for the fall. We’re looking forward to giving her a big fall refresh! 🧡
