I often have people asking which plants are the best for oxygen production and air purification, and I kept meaning to look into this, as all plants produce oxygen. So I wondered why Snake plants and Spider plants are especially recommended.

Snake plants and spider plants are recommended, especially in bedrooms, because they produce oxygen even at night, whereas most plants only produce oxygen during the day. Many plants also slow down their metabolic processes during periods of low light, but snake plants and spider plants do not. Snakes are also recommended for their easy care - low light tolerance and less frequent watering requirements, as they like to dry out completely before being watered again.

Spider plants have similar benefits and have been shown to pull more toxins from the air than many other plants, and they are also pet-friendly. They do need more frequent watering, however, as they prefer not to dry out completely.

Plants have many additional benefits for your physical and emotional well-being, so I still just recommend getting plants that grab your attention, that make you feel happy, and that fit in your environment so that they stay healthy. The joy of seeing plants in your care thriving is much more beneficial than the slight difference between air purification abilities. Plants improve mood and cognition, make employees more productive, and activities such as gardening or repotting houseplants have been shown to lower blood pressure.

Life is short - get a plant!

Which “Holiday Cactus” do you have? Did you know that while they are succulents, they are different from desert cacti? These are Tropical Cacti, and as such, they don’t want to dry out completely between waterings and their soil needs are different. This cacti does better in a well-drained Aroid Mix rather than a Cactus Soil. They also only want to dry out about halfway down before watering. They need about 4-6 hours a day of very bright light to get the little buds that will then bloom around the holiday they are named for. Some folks say they need a period of total darkness (which is what I’d always heard), but the correct amount of daily light is more important.

Have you heard of “Strings of Things” plants? They are so cute! You may have only heard of String of Pearls or String of Hearts - but check out these cuties! They are a great little conversation piece and will trail and get long with proper care. They like bright light (to the top of the pot), well-draining soil, and water before they get completely dry.
