Inishowen Farms

Inishowen Farms You are all welcome to enjoy the fresh air and open areas of our sales yard. Inishowen Farms is owned and operated by Mark & Tammy Doherty.

We grow our perennials without the benefit of man-made heat. In other words, some of the cuttings begin life inside one of our two greenhouses but are only heated by the warmth of the sun. These plants are moved outdoors at the earliest possible time, to be sure they are cold-toughened and ready for your garden.

Tonight, A Ghost Town:
In 1939, a good portion of Dana, MA, disappeared under what is now the Quabbin Reservoir. But a large part of the town sat on higher ground and can still be seen by visitors today. Some say the town is haunted by former residents. One of those is Asa Snow.

Asa moved to Dana in 1840. In 1844, he lost his first wife and, a year later, his young daughter. He had a large family tomb built in 1860, for his first wife, their daughter and (later) himself. He died in 1872. Rumors of buried money and treasure led to numerous desecration of his grave and property. When the Quabbin Reservoir was built, the Snows were moved to a new cemetery and the tomb destroyed. For years after his death, people reported seeing Asa's ghost. Is he searching for his treasure?

Do ghosts linger in the remains of Dana? Or is the old town haunted only by memories?

Ever come across a tractor seemingly abandoned in a field? This is the story as told to us.

In the 1950s there was a farmer who had 3 sons and 1 daughter. He loved his sons but his little girl was by far his favorite. She did everything with him and loved riding on his brand new tractor with him while doing farm chores. One day, she fell ill and the doctors could do nothing for her; she left this world much too young. The father's grief was great and he thought of her every time he drove that tractor.

As the years went by, the farmer grew old and passed away. His sons, not knowing the significance of the tractor, sold it to a local collector who lovingly restored it to like-new condition. As the new owner used the tractor for the first time to mow the field, everything seemed to be working perfectly. As he looked around, he realized that a pretty little girl with a beautiful smile was on the fender of the tractor. Surprised, he stared as she vanished. He parked the tractor at the edge of the field, telling the ghost "If you like this tractor that much, I'll let you have it." And there the tractor sits to this day.

Tonight's "In The Spirit of Halloween" - headless horsemen aren't limited to Sleepy Hollow!
The Headless Paymaster -
From the late 18th century until the late 19th century, travelers along the Albany Turnpike between Hartford and Upstate New York reported sightings of a headless horseman. One account states that a man traveling this road at dusk had a feeling of foreboding as gloom and fog swirl about. Suddenly his horse stops, ears pricked forward. Off the worn path someone is faintly visible, sitting astride a horse. The traveler calls out, asking for directions to the Hosford Stand, a famous inn along the route. The figure points silently then gallops off into the fog. Only then does it sink in with a cold shudder of fear - the rider had no head!
In the waning years of the Revolutionary War, a young lieutenant of the allied French forces left Hartford, CT, heading for Saratoga, NY. He was carrying gold coins to pay his comrades fighting in the war. The lieutenant stopped for the night at an inn near Canton, CT. Many in the taproom noticed the well-dressed officer and the heavy saddlebags he carried. The soldier asked for food and private lodgings, which he was granted. He was never seen again - alive.
In 1874, the Hosford Stand burned the ground. While cleaning up, workers discovered skeleton remains partially buried in the inn's cellar floor. Interestingly, the skull was found some distance away. Local legend says the innkeeper claimed that he woke the lieutenant the next morning. Curiously, despite the decline in business at the inn, the innkeeper always seemed quite prosperous.
