We asked kitchen pros what makes a cherry kitchen look dated. Their answer:

It’s not the cherry wood itself. It’s how it’s styled.

Their suggestions for using cherry wood in your kitchen:

- Pick simple, clean door styles
- Swap some big lower doors for drawers
- Don’t line every cabinet up at the same height
- Add a couple of glass upper doors to break up the wall

Do you love cherry as much as we do, or prefer a different wood?

"Is retro kitchen design back, or is this just nostalgia?"

Genuinely back (in our humble opinion).

The trick to avoid making it look cheesy?

Only add a few retro features, like chrome pulls, mint-green upper cabinets, or 60s-style light fixtures.

And keep the rest of the finishes contemporary.

Cherry cabinets aren't just for your grandmother's vintage kitchen.

You can make them look surprisingly modern with a few tricks:

✨ Simple door styles (like slab)
✨ Light countertops
✨ Modern hardware (like brushed brass / matte black)

Our favorite look this year is cherry wood cabinets on the island, and lighter cabinets up top. Creates instant two-tone contrast, and zero dated vibes.

The 50s were playful, and then the 60s got sleek.

1950s kitchens featured fun pastel colors, Formica counters, and chrome as far as the eye can see. 👀

Then in the 1960s kitchens had flatter doors, wood veneers, and a cooler color palette.

Both can still look beautiful in 2026, but they need to be paired with the right modern touches to pull it off.

Why do people hate on cherry cabinets? They don't deserve a bad reputation.

Yes, they darken over time. But that's not a flaw in our eyes - it's the wood aging into something richer. The same way good leather does.

Cost-wise, cherry comes in below walnut and white oak. But final cost depends on the finish.

Remember when kitchens felt like a warm hug? That's retro design.

Those bold colors, that chrome hardware... Sigh. The 1950s and 60s kind of nailed it with kitchens.

But there's a trick to bringing it into 2026 without looking like a scene from Fallout.

The trick? Let the cabinets look nostalgic, and keep everything else modern.

Are white oak kitchen cabinets in style?

Let's compare it to hardwood flooring. Stain colors shift with the years, but the wood itself never really goes out of style.

"Can you repaint thermofoil if you get sick of the color?"

No, you can't unfortunately.

Once the vinyl surface is damaged or you want a new shade, a full replacement is really the only option.

Painted cabinets, on the other hand, can be touched up or fully repainted anytime!

Same clean cabinet finish. Very different story.

Thermofoil
✨ seamless
✨ budget friendly
✨ best for modern and minimalist kitchens

Painted
✨ endless color options
✨ repairable
✨ best for traditional and transitional spaces

Our favorite trick pulled straight from the guide:

To keep costs down, use a painted perimeter with a thermofoil island for a two-tone look.
