I spent a wonderful day helping to plant a Miyawaki grove at the Tufts Park in Medford today. It's modeled on the Sugar Maple - Oak - Hickory Forest I discovered at Bear Hill in the Middlesex Fells. An eagle flew overhead when we started & a monarch butterfly flew through checking it out! Great staff & volunteers, lots of interesting connections & conversations.

Two years ago I accepted a gift of a couple dozen bare root oaks rather than see them destroyed. I spent the last two days digging them out of my garden where I had heeled them in & potting them up: Bur, Chestnut, Scarlet & White. A few Bur have been given away (still some available) & the Reds are going into a Miyawaki planting. As most of you know Oaks are THE keystone genus supporting the highest number of insects as well as mammals & birds which rely on their acorns.

Kaye's making jam with our wild River Grapes. They're half the size of Fox Grapes but sweeter without the foxy flavor. A flock of catbirds was here today feasting on the grapes which are an important food for migrating birds.

I was out with Native Plant Trust volunteers today checking on a population of rare & endangered Whorled Pogonia Orchid (Isotria verticillata). We found a few plants, they look very similar to Indian Cucumber Root but have 1 main vein vs. 3 & broader leaves. We also saw Red Pinesap (Hypopitys lanuginosa)
