Placemaking and Bridging Communities

For architect Michael Guthrie, M.Arch ’98, his decades of practice are rooted in placemaking, community impact, and design innovation. This work can be particularly impactful in large-scale urban design projects, including pedestrian bridges that have become world-class destinations, economic actuators, and places for people to connect with their communities and the surrounding ecologies.

As we approach the June 30th anniversary of the Ann Arbor District Library - Traverwood Branch, we reflect on its significance for our firm. This project, completed in 2008, was a cornerstone in expanding the AADL system and it serves as a vital community center for northeast Ann Arbor.

Located near the Sapp Nature Area, the library’s design prioritized environmental sustainability and featured innovative use of reclaimed Ash wood. This landmark project not only supported the community but also our commitment to sustainable and community-focused architecture.

Celebrating a Grand Reopening of AMITY Coworking! INFORM’s Inspire & Impact Episode 15 is out 🎉 AMITY, a shared workspace completed by INFORM in 2018, was designed to combine elevated design + hospitality-centered amenities to create a unique co-working experience for its members.

In this Inspire & Impact episode, we speak with Northville’s Mayor - Brian Turnbull, Attorney, Kristi Crawford for Vital Vistas, and Sam Martinez, Digital Analyst, and Carolyn Sauer, Director of Business Development, of Schaltbau North America.

Located within a rehabilitated Model T manufacturing plant designed by Albert Kahn in 1936, AMITY utilizes many features of the original shell, including divided light window walls, exposed joists, and concrete flooring. These elements are historical, and were drivers in the workplace design strategy that relies on natural light and a variety of flexible spaces to promote focus, collaboration, and well-being.

Congratulations to Shawn and Dustin on the grand reopening!

from Buro Happold • “Providence River Pedestrian Bridge

Location: Providence, Rhode Island, USA

Services Provided: Structural engineering

Project Key Fact: The Pedestrian Bridge takes the place of the rerouted highway, leaving open space for a park on either side of the river. This urban infrastructure and development helps stitch together pieces of Providence and provides a new link between neighborhoods and a place for gathering and activity. The design includes a boardwalk and landscaped green space linking two new riverside parks together, as part of a large city scheme of harborside and downtown redevelopment.
