Now through early December is the ideal time to sow native seeds as the vast majority need to go through winter to unlock their ability to germinate.

This past weekend…we hope you all stayed as cozy as a monarch caterpillar hunkered down in a greenhouse. We’ll update you when this little one has gone full chrysalis.

We are back to normal hours and hope to see you soon. It’s a great time to plant for insects or to grab seeds for next year’s plants 🐛

We will be closed all weekend due to the impending Nor’easter and will also be closing early today (Friday) at 2pm.

We’ll be busy buttoning down the hatches, removing all our signs, getting plants ready, etc. The one Monarch caterpillar on our milkweed plants is safely tucked away in the greenhouse ready to ride out the storm!

Stay safe every one!

Behind the scenes…everyone always comments how, as garden center/nursery owners, we must have lovely yards…alas…

We’re so busy with Blue Stem that I think our personal yards are a disaster (mine at least). I have a hard time editing out plants that aren’t working and a bad habit of bringing home only sad scrappy looking plants.

But it really is a great time to plant. Both Kristen and I have actually been planting at our own homes the last few weeks. Under this serviceberry (Amelanchier canadensis) in my yard there were non-native weeds mixed in with self-sown native species like common milkweed, blue vervain, pokeweed, and other tall species that just don’t really fit under a serviceberry. And it just “read” as pure chaos.

Working in this section to the right, I pulled the weeds, moved the good stuff, and also saved seeds from the blue vervain and the milkweed to sow in a better area. In their place I planted a lot of Packera obovata (running groundsel) which should thrive in this area, forming a groundcover to help keep weeds at bay. It doesn’t look like much now but really I’m planting for next year, these plants should still have time to establish now and so they can wake up ready to go in the spring. Bonus…major discounts at Blue Stem right now.

I’m taking it one small section at a time, you can see New England Aster (another tall one!) sowed it self to the left of this planted area and some sort of non-native mint. A project for another day.

Cheers to fall planting…and editing!

(Also I’m a fan of pokeweed but also have a dog that eats everything)
