I have a serious love affair with the creative process… especially the part where I get to play with things that probably have no business being in the same room together.

I love a little tension in a room. A piece that makes you look twice. And I’m a big believer that a room should have some personality (preferably a lot).

This is where my brain is happiest- pushing things around until it feels right for the people who will actually live there.

Give me a room with potential and I’m down for the adventure. Every time.

A client once told me she was going to design her entire house with AI.

My inner voice: good luck with that.

I love AI. I use it every day. But have you noticed how many AI rooms have the same candlesticks? The same plants? The same accessories? SO many. AI hasn’t gotten personal. And it can’t.

This library is real. My client wanted a religious scene painted on the pitched ceiling… but he’d just bought two antique globes from Sotheby’s and was so lit up about them. So we reworked the ceiling into a 13½-foot dome and painted a globe up there instead. (Swipe to see it mid-build.)

Then the shelves… authentic American books you can actually smell, objets from all over the globe, butterflies under glass, and old family photos tucked in among the leather bindings.

No rendering would ever have come up with that room, because no rendering knew about the globes.

A client said something to me a while back. “You know, I was going to design my entire house with AI.”

My inner voice: Good luck with that.

Don’t get me wrong. I’m a huge AI fan and I use it every day. But some of the most beautiful rooms I’ve seen lately have one rather significant thing in common… they don’t exist. The fireplace is floating in front of a structural column. The sofa is about four inches deep. And there’s always an olive tree thriving in a room with no windows.

And I’ll say the part a lot of designers won’t. AI is absolutely going to put some of us out of business. The ones who refuse to touch it, or get offended when a client shows up with an AI image. And the ones without enough experience to push back when a client falls for a room that’s gorgeous and has no soul. Can AI generate a full room in seconds? Sure. So can I, with AI as my first pass. It gets me close to the look and feel, fast, and it helps a client see where we’re headed. But without field measurements and someone who understands the structure, it’s a pretty guess.

People using these images as inspiration is fantastic. Copy the styling and voila… you’ve got a room that looks designed. But have you noticed how many of them have the same candlesticks? The same plants? The same accessories? SO many. AI hasn’t gotten personal. Period. And it can’t.

Because the part no AI can do is notice things. Like the library in these photos. My client and I talked at length about creating something out of the box that still felt like a traditional library… just without the Benjamin Franklin green and the Turkish rug. Fairly late in construction, he decided he wanted a religious scene painted on the ceiling. But he’d just bought two antique globes from England at Sotheby’s, one terrestrial and one celestial, and he was so lit up about them. AI couldn’t have seen that. So I said, why don’t we paint a globe up there?

The only problem was that his ceiling was a triangle. Back to the architect I went, and we redesigned the ceiling and rerouted the ductwork for a 13½-foot dome. No small undertaking at that stage of construction, but we pulled it off. We painted North America from the terrestrial globe across the dome, and I added the family’s zodiac signs as a nod to the celestial one, so both of his globes ended up over that room.

And then the shelves. I curated a collection of authentic American books, the kind you can actually touch. Bindings you can feel, leather you can smell, worn pages. Objets I gathered from all over the globe, every one of them one of a kind. Butterflies under glass. Old photos of his family, generations back, tucked in among the books.

No rendering would ever have come up with that room, because no rendering knew about the globes.

I believe home is the most important place on earth. The four walls around you need to inspire, support and nurture you, so that the person who walks out your front door is the best version of you.

I wrote more about all of this (olive trees included). Link in the comments.

I always encourage my clients to live in their spaces, get to know them, and pay attention to how they feel.

Where does everyone naturally gather? Where does the morning light land? What corner of the house makes you want to curl up and stay awhile?

Those little discoveries tell me so much more than a floor plan ever could.

I love a beautifully finished room as much as anyone, but I also believe in leaving room for a home to evolve. For the unexpected finds, the collected treasures, and the stories that haven’t happened yet.

Every home has its own pulse. Give yourself time to discover yours.

Can we talk about how sexy this TV lounge is? I still have such a thing for this room, and had an absolute blast designing it.

The lacquered ceiling by the insanely talented Marc Potocsky, that gorgeous moody wallpaper, and a custom sectional you could lose an entire weekend on. Seriously.

And we hadn’t even styled it yet!

There are a few befores tucked into the reel. She’s come a long way, baby. 😉

I’d move right in.

The holidays are creeping up, and my mind is already wandering to long dinners, good friends, great music, and those nights when nobody wants to leave the table.

Gathering has always been one of my greatest loves, and creating spaces for all that beautiful human connection is one of my favorite parts of being a designer. Formal dining room, cozy breakfast nook, or a kitchen island where everyone ends up anyway. Wherever your table is, there’s a whole lot of life waiting to happen around it.

Our table will be a little smaller this year. Just our girls joining us in Scottsdale as we begin making new traditions. We’ll be missing Miles, our friends, and all those familiar faces who would stop by and end up staying for hours.

There’s a little bittersweetness in starting over, even when you’re exactly where you want to be. But I’m excited for the stories, friendships, and memories that haven’t found their way to our table yet.

I wanted this library to feel like time. Not a particular era, but the feeling of being surrounded by centuries of stories, beautiful objects, and things worth holding onto.

And of course, the layers! Worn leather, plush velvet, rich woods, natural stone, and a one-of-a-kind rug that has lived a life of its own.

My client has a love affair with history, so naturally, I had a field day. Every book was curated, every piece of art has a personal connection, and nothing was chosen simply to fill a space.

The bookshelves are perfectly imperfect. This isn’t a perfectly styled shelving situation where every book is aligned and every object is placed just so. It was meant to feel natural, as if someone had pulled a book off the shelf, read a few pages, and casually put it back. The beauty is in that sense of ease, movement, and real life.

I love a room that makes you curious. That pulls you in, makes you want to touch things, pick up a book, ask a question, stay a little longer.

There’s something incredibly sexy about a space with depth, history, and a little mystery.

This is my idea of The Intimate Home. And this library has stories for days.

With Thanksgiving around the corner, I thought I’d revisit one of my favorite breakfast room transformations.

I’ve always been a little obsessed with the way a room can bring people together. Especially this time of year, when the table gets crowded, conversations get louder, and nobody seems to want to leave.

For this space, I designed a custom table that expands to make room for a few more (because there’s always room for a few more!). Layers of soft whites, beautiful textures, and those gorgeous outdoor views keep everything light and airy. And a neutral backdrop leaves plenty of room to have fun with holiday decor!

I love thinking about the life that happens in the spaces I design. The long breakfasts, the extra chair pulled up for someone unexpected, the stories told around the table for years to come.

Knowing that these rooms will be filled with love, laughter, and a whole lot of memories long after I’ve left? That’s the part I love most.

Hello, Arizona! 🌵

Consider this a little pregame introduction before the official one drops. I couldn’t wait to say hi.

New landscape, new inspiration, and about a million ideas already brewing. The obsession with creating spaces that have soul? Oh, that’s coming with me.

From concept to candlelight, I’m in it. Every inch, every layer, and yes, I’ll absolutely obsess over the tiniest details.

Full builds, boutique commercial, one-room transformations, staging. I love it all.

But my real jam? Creating homes from the ground up. Getting to know the people who will live in them, telling their stories through every room, every detail, every unexpected little moment. I want your jaw to drop when you walk through the door, but more than anything, I want you to feel HOME. Capital H. The kind of place that gets under your skin, in the best possible way.

I’ve spent over 20 years getting to know people, hearing their stories, figuring out what makes them tick, and translating all of that into spaces that feel unmistakably theirs. And somehow, after all these years, I still get ridiculously excited about it.

Now I’ve landed in the desert, and I have a whole new playground.

Scottsdale, I want to meet your people, see your spaces, hear your stories, and bring a little JWI magic to this gorgeous corner of the world.

Something tells me we’re going to get along just fine. ✨
