Since we have moved away from using our business group as much to this page and we have many new followers who were not originally in the group. I’d like to post the story behind our name for those who do not know just how special it is. We absolutely love the vintage world and like I’ve said before it’s not about a dollar sign or numbers on a spreadsheet. We genuinely love bringing these special pieces to others and spreading that joyous feeling of a memory we all hold dear to our hearts from loved ones gone.
The story behind Mamaw’s House…
Earlier this year I asked my mom and little sister if they’d like to have a vintage booth with me in Nine Oaks of Oak Grove. They agreed and we started preparing to move in after some renovations were completed by June. We needed a name. Kennedy wanted it to be something special that honors our Mamaw Linnie Layton, mom’s mother. Why, might you ask? Well Mamaw was the true QUEEN of it all, yard sales, thrift stores, antique malls, flea markets, you name it she didn’t pass one up!
We grew up spending our summers with her and my papaw as they traveled pipelining. I loved when she’d say: “Now girls, we’re getting up early in the morning and going to a bunch of rummage sales.” I was always so excited about what treasures I might find! As a little girl that usually meant Barbies, Polly Pockets, and anything Disney or girly for me. I don’t like getting up early but I didn’t mind it if it meant a fun day of shopping with Mamaw! She loved a bargain, ask my Uncle Marty about the story of all the irons. I’m sure it will make you chuckle.
So over the years the three of us, Mom, Kennedy and I did enjoy thrift shops, antiques, flea markets, and yard sales occasionally. Well actually I liked the yard sales a bit more than them and it was still something Mamaw and I liked to do together, but none of us had the love and well let’s face it “addiction” like Mamaw did. She seriously didn’t miss one! Mamaw passed away in August 2024. I don’t think any of us knew how we would ever be able to live in a world without her.
After she passed it was as if her extreme love for all of this passed on and embodied each of us in full capacity. We’re hooked, but honestly the love of all things vintage has always been there. So we’re thinking on names for the booth and hadn’t quite found one that felt right. Then one day I saw a sign for a similar name of an online shop. I sent it to Mom and Kennedy in our group chat and asked what they thought, but to switch it up to simply say “Mamaw’s House”. The reason being it’s two little words we’ve spoken countless times over the years. A place that is so incredibly special to us, not just the physical house itself but the feeling that lives there. Happiness and love to all who spent a little time at this house and magic in the eyes of all the grands and great grandchildren. The memories, oh the best memories for all three of us are soaked in the porous stones of this house. The sentiment “if walls could talk” I think they’d be struggling to talk between all the laughter and tears of joy.
In 1976 an EF3 tornado destroyed the original house, but my Papaw rebuilt it with his own two hands. He built it for my Mamaw, my Moma, and my uncle Marty; but I don’t think he knew then just exactly what a legacy he truly was building. In March 2010 country star Miranda Lambert released her hit song “The House That Built Me”; THIS IS the house that built me, my sister and our Moma. It was always Mamaw’s House that was the center of it all.
